Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific region, ranging from Madagascar to Fiji and northern Australia. It inhabits coastal freshwater rivers, streams, and swamps with slow flow and dense vegetation.
Taxonomy: Historically classified as Caridina serratirostris. Recent taxonomic works (circa 2026) place it in the genus Marosina based on genetic and morphological uniqueness. Belongs to the family Atyidae, named for its serrated rostrum.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, active, and highly social. They should be kept in groups of at least 8 to 10 individuals to encourage active behavior. They spend their time grazing on bio-cover, organic detritus, and algae.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Famous for their ability to quickly change color from bright red to brown, black, blue, or cream, matching their substrate. Females are slightly larger and have deeper abdominal plates to carry eggs.

Water Quality: Keep temperatures between 22°C and 27°C (72-81°F), pH 6.5 to 8.0, and soft to medium hardness. Ensure a sponge pre-filter is installed on filter intakes to prevent shrimp from being sucked in. Water must be well-oxygenated.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Peaceful toward all tankmates. Best kept in a dedicated shrimp tank. If housed in community aquariums, choose small, non-aggressive species like micro-devario or small tetras. Avoid large or predatory fish.
Aquarium Breeding: Extremely challenging. While females spawn and carry numerous tiny eggs, the hatched larvae require brackish water stages to develop and metamorphose before transitioning back to freshwater, similar to Amano shrimp.
Risks and Diseases: Copper is highly toxic even in trace amounts. Susceptible to molting issues if water minerals are low. Avoid rapid water parameter fluctuations during water changes; drip acclimation is highly recommended.
