Indonesian Tiger Fish (Datnoid)
Datnioides microlepis
The 'Golden Tiger' of Asia (40-45 cm / 15-18 inches). The ultimate, highly-coveted, must-have addition to any elite 'Monster Fish Tank'. It is a towering, massively thick, leaf-shaped giant famous for its stunning, glowing gold/mustard body slashed by 7 stark, ink-black vertical tiger stripes. It is a famously peaceful, incredibly lazy 'lurking' predator that spends its life hovering motionlessly at an angle near giant driftwood, looking like a broken branch, only to instantly and violently vacuum-inhale smaller fish in the blink of an eye.

Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Southeast Asia (Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, Borneo, Sumatra). Prefers immense rivers and oxbow lakes with bottoms covered by flooded forests, roots and submerged obstacles.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Indonesian Tiger Fish (Datnioides microlepis). Famous predatory fish for "Monster Tanks". The snout is incredibly extensible into a lethal suction tube. Stocky and formidable body.
Social Behavior: Nocturnal and crepuscular ambush predator. Can be kept either as a solitary specimen or in large schools. In small groups (2-4 specimens), continuous hierarchical skirmishes push it to darken its colors due to stress.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Blinding golden or metallic yellow background, usually divided by 5 to 7 neat vertical black bands similar to those of tigers (variations on the number of stripes insanely influence the market price in Asia). Sexually identical.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Aquarium Setup: Gigantic. Minimum 200 cm (80 inches) in length (tanks of 1000 liters / 260 gallons and over are often used). Colossal filtration, large open spaces alternating with imposing branched trunks where it can camouflage itself (in nature they simulate dead leaves by tilting).
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous macropredator. Will swallow any fish within range. Great patience is required to wean it onto dead fish (smelt, silversides, fillets). Shelled prawns and mussels are welcome. Infected live food (goldfish feeders) must be avoided.
Water Quality: Extremely sensitive to water quality despite its size. If nitrates increase, the livery becomes "smoke black", fading completely (the "Darkening" phenomenon). Large weekly changes are necessary.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Exclusive fish for giant fish tanks (Monster Fish). Excellent together with large freshwater rays (Stingrays), large Loricariids, Arowanas, or large non-brawling Cichlids. Any fish under 15 cm (6 inches) is a snack.
Aquarium Breeding: Completely unknown and never documented in home or commercial aquariums due to their size and complex seasonal hormonal triggers of the monsoons.
Risks and Diseases: Profound apathy, anorexia and darkening (the fish becomes gray-black, "stuck on black") if the water is of poor quality or there is incessant bullying by aggressive tankmates.

Perfil de peixe
- Temperamento
- Semi-aggressive
- Known for their somewhat solitary and stealthy nature, Datnoids possess a temperament that is both predatory and surprisingly shy. When provided with adequate hiding spaces, they will spend much of their time observing their surroundings from the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to strike at food. While not overtly aggressive to large tank mates, they can become highly territorial and violently intolerant of other Datnoids or similarly patterned fish. Overall, they command respect and require an environment that caters to their specific predatory habits and need for security.
- Dieta
- Omnivore
- They are strict carnivores with a strong preference for live or very fresh meaty foods. In the wild, their diet consists primarily of smaller fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. In captivity, they must be transitioned to a varied diet of high-quality frozen or fresh foods such as silversides, shrimp, earthworms, and chopped fish fillets. Training them to accept large carnivorous pellets is highly beneficial for nutritional balance but often requires significant time and patience.
- Expectativa de vida
- 10-15 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 45 cm
- Proporção sexual
- Pair
- There are absolutely no known external sexual dimorphisms present in Datnioides microlepis. Males and females look completely identical, making visual identification impossible for even the most experienced keepers. Because breeding them in home aquariums is practically impossible, the sex ratio of kept fish is generally considered irrelevant for the average hobbyist. If one were attempting commercial breeding, sexing would require invasive methods or relying on natural pairing in massive ponds.
- Frequência de alimentação
- Twice daily
- Juvenile Datnoids have fast metabolisms and require feeding once or twice daily with appropriately sized meaty foods to support rapid growth. As they mature into large adults, their metabolism slows down, and their feeding frequency should be reduced to prevent obesity and unnecessary water pollution. Feeding adults a large, satisfying meal every other day or three times a week is generally optimal. Always monitor their body condition and adjust the feeding schedule accordingly to maintain a healthy girth.
- Carga biológica
- Extreme
- The Indonesian Tiger Datnoid is a large, predatory fish that produces a significantly heavy bioload. As they grow to their impressive adult size and consume large, meaty meals, the amount of waste they excrete places a massive demand on the filtration system. Powerful, oversized canister filters or large sump systems are absolutely mandatory to handle the biological processing required. Frequent and substantial water changes are also critical to keep nitrate levels manageable and ensure optimal health.
- Fluxo
- Stagnant
- Coming from large rivers, lakes, and slow-moving tributaries in Southeast Asia, they prefer an environment with moderate but steady water flow. Extremely strong, turbulent currents should be avoided as they are broad-bodied fish that can tire easily if constantly fighting heavy flow. A gentle to moderate circulation that ensures good oxygenation without creating a whirlpool effect is ideal. Strategic placement of filter outflows can create pleasant drifting currents while maintaining calm resting areas behind large pieces of driftwood.
- Risco de salto
- Yes
- Datnoids are large, powerful, and easily spooked fish, making them a significant jump risk, especially during feeding or if they feel threatened. A sudden fright response can send a massive fish rocketing toward the water's surface with incredible force. Therefore, a very heavy, tightly fitting, and completely secure aquarium lid is non-negotiable for this species. Even small gaps should be covered, as they can accurately launch themselves out of surprisingly small openings.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Breeding the Indonesian Tiger Datnoid in a home aquarium setting is exceptionally rare and virtually undocumented in the hobby. They require massive volumes of water, specific seasonal changes, and likely hormonal triggers that are extremely difficult to replicate indoors. Most specimens available in the trade are either wild-caught or produced in large-scale commercial breeding facilities in Asia using specialized aquaculture techniques. Therefore, hobbyists should not expect to breed this species in a standard home setup.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- Peaceful
- While predatory and capable of consuming any fish small enough to fit into their surprisingly large mouths, they are generally peaceful toward fish they cannot eat. They can be successfully housed with other large, robust, and non-aggressive species such as Arowanas, large peaceful Cichlids, and sizeable Catfish. However, keeping multiple Datnoids together can be very challenging due to intense intraspecific aggression, especially in confined spaces. If a group is desired, keeping them in uneven numbers (three or more) in a massive tank can sometimes diffuse aggression.
- Nível do tanque
- Middle
- Datnoids are distinctly mid-to-bottom-dwelling fish that prefer to inhabit the lower strata of the aquarium. They are ambush predators by nature and will spend significant amounts of time hovering near or hiding among large pieces of driftwood, rock formations, or dense vegetation. They rarely venture to the extreme top of the tank unless food is present at the surface. Providing ample cover and structural elements in the lower half of the tank is crucial for their sense of security.
