Geographical Origin and Habitat: This extraordinary amphibian species is native to the primary and secondary tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, distributed particularly across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and southern Thailand. It lives almost exclusively in the high forest canopy, descending to the forest floor or near temporary pools of water only during the breeding season to lay eggs.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Rhacophorus nigropalmatus belongs to the family Rhacophoridae, commonly known as Old World tree frogs. Genetically, it possesses unique evolutionary adaptations for gliding flight. The species is monophyletic, but island populations in Borneo exhibit subtle morphological and bioacoustic differences compared to mainland populations, which are subjects of ongoing phylogenetic research.
Behavior and Habits: It is a highly specialized arboreal amphibian with both diurnal and nocturnal activity. Its most famous characteristic is its ability to glide from tree to tree or down to the forest floor, covering distances of up to 15 meters. It should be set up as a tropical rainforest, with plenty of sturdy branches arranged diagonally and horizontally, live broad-leaved plants (such as Philodendron, Monstera, or Anthurium), and a back wall covered in cork or coconut fiber. The ideal substrate is a mix of coconut fiber and damp sphagnum moss.
Lighting and Heating: Very low-intensity UVB lighting (2.0 or a shaded 5% bulb) is recommended for general amphibian health, on a 12-hour cycle. Temperatures must be regulated carefully: daytime temperatures should range between 24°C and 26°C, with a nighttime drop to between 20°C and 22°C. Avoid heat spikes above 28°C, which can be fatal for these forest-dwelling frogs.
Humidity and Hydration: Humidity must be kept consistently high, between 80% and 90%. It is essential to install a timed automatic misting system that triggers several times a day, and an ultrasonic fogger to create morning and evening mist. A large bowl of clean, dechlorinated water should be provided at the bottom of the terrarium, shallow enough for the frogs to soak in safely.
Feeding and Supplementation: Their diet is strictly insectivorous and must consist of live insects of appropriate size, such as crickets, roaches (Dubia or red runners), silkworms, locusts, and occasionally mealworms or waxworms. Feeder insects must be dusted with pure calcium powder twice a week, and with calcium plus D3 and an amphibian-specific multivitamin once a week.
Compatibility: They can be kept individually or in small groups consisting of one male and two females in very large enclosures. Avoid keeping multiple males together to prevent stressful territorial disputes during the breeding season. They should not be housed with other amphibian or reptile species to prevent stress, pathogen transmission, and mutual predation risks.
