Trichodiniasis is a skin and gill parasitosis caused by heavy burdens of Trichodina and related ciliates. Small numbers may occur without obvious disease; injury develops when multiplication, stress and stocking exceed host capacity. Burden must therefore be assessed rather than diagnosing from one cell.

Differential diagnosis
Chilodonella, Ichthyobodo and Tetrahymena cause similar mucus and irritation; ammonia, nitrite and hypoxia mimic respiratory distress. Under microscopy Trichodina is disc-like and spins rapidly, with a denticle ring visible at suitable magnification. A fish photograph cannot separate these differentials.

The life cycle is direct, and ciliates exploit high density, organic load and stressed hosts. Transport, crowding and poor water quality favour clinical burdens without being the taxonomic cause. Nets, water and animals can transfer the parasite between systems.
