Chilodonellosis is a skin and gill disease caused by Chilodonella ciliates. It can multiply rapidly on stressed fish and cause major respiratory damage, especially in dense or young groups. Because it may also be found on deteriorating tissue, site, burden and lesions must agree.

Signs and progression

Whitish or bluish mucus, flashing, clamped fins, lethargy and appetite loss are frequent. With dominant gill damage, fish ventilate rapidly and seek the surface or current. Progression can be abrupt in small fish, but no external sign is exclusive.

Differential diagnosis

Trichodina, Ichthyobodo and early ich can produce mucus and flashing; ammonia or chlorine injury mimics gill disease. Chilodonella is flattened, asymmetric and often leaf- or heart-shaped in a fresh mount. Shape and movement require suitable magnification.

A direct life cycle enables rapid transfer through fish, water and equipment. Crowding, low oxygenation and unstable parameters increase susceptibility and intensity. Correcting them is necessary, but environmental readings do not identify the parasite.

Sampling and confirmation

Immediately examine fresh skin scrapes and gill biopsies from several fish, sampling the edge of mucous areas. Document density and motion and relate them to epithelial injury and signs. A fish dead for some time may carry opportunistic ciliates and is not an ideal specimen.

Quarantine with daily observation and separate tools reduces introduction. Appropriate stocking, oxygenation and detritus removal prevent small burdens rising rapidly. Investigate mucus and flashing promptly instead of blindly treating the whole group.
