Giant African Land Snail
Lissachatina fulica
The Lissachatina fulica (Giant African Land Snail). It is by far the most bred terrestrial snail in the world, famous for its colossal size (the conical shell can exceed 8 inches) and for the docility with which it lets itself be handled. A nocturnal and crepuscular species, it loves a hot-humid climate and darkness, spending its days half-submerged in the soft potting soil and then emerging in the evening to relentlessly explore the terrarium in search of vegetables and, above all, pure Calcium (cuttlebone) essential for the construction of its huge brown and cream mottled shell. Despite appearances, it is a lively animal, long-lived (up to 10 years) and of rudimentary but fascinating intelligence, capable of recognizing habits and textures. It is sadly known as a highly invasive species (banned in some regions like the USA) due to its hermaphroditic ability to lay hundreds of white spherical eggs in a few weeks: the careful management of the litters, or the systematic freezing of the eggs, is the only real, inescapable obligation for the beginner.

Profil der terrestrischen Wirbellosen
- Diät
- Herbivore
- They are highly voracious herbivores and scavengers, consuming a vast variety of plant matter including vegetables, fruits, and decaying vegetation. In captivity, they require a consistent source of calcium, such as cuttlebone, to support the rapid growth and maintenance of their massive shells. A diverse diet ensures they receive necessary vitamins, though highly acidic foods like citrus should be avoided.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 20 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Terrestrial
- They lead a terrestrial lifestyle, inhabiting tropical and subtropical regions where moisture is abundant. Their entire existence revolves around finding food and maintaining adequate hydration levels, making humid forest floors and agricultural areas ideal habitats. They rely heavily on their strong muscular foot for locomotion over various terrains.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Nocturnal
- These snails are almost entirely nocturnal, preferring to forage and move about during the night when temperatures drop and humidity rises. During the day, they typically bury themselves in damp soil or hide under debris to protect themselves from the sun and prevent desiccation. Rain often triggers increased activity, even during daylight hours.
- Sozialität
- Gregarious
- They are generally very docile, communal animals that can easily and safely be housed together in groups. There is virtually no aggression observed between individuals, though extreme overcrowding in a small enclosure can occasionally lead to accidental shell damage or competition over prime feeding sites and calcium sources.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Giant African land snails are simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning each individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs. Despite this, they typically require a partner to mate and can lay hundreds of eggs in a single clutch. Their high reproductive rate and rapid maturation make them highly prolific and potentially invasive in non-native regions.
- Giftig
- No
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Tolerant
- They are incredibly easy and safe to handle, though care must be taken to support their heavy shell to prevent mantle tearing. Before handling, it is crucial to wash hands thoroughly to remove any salts, oils, or chemicals that could be absorbed through their permeable skin. Their slow movements make them excellent subjects for gentle observation.
- Brumation
- Nicht erforderlich
- While they do not brumate in the traditional reptilian sense, they undergo estivation during periods of extreme drought or heat. During estivation, they seal their shell opening and can remain dormant for months until favorable, moist conditions return. In a controlled, consistently humid captive environment, they usually remain active year-round without estivating.
- Häutung
- Periodic
- As snails, they do not molt or shed an exoskeleton like arthropods or reptiles; instead, their shell grows continuously with them throughout their life. The new shell material is added to the leading edge (the lip), which is often fragile and easily damaged if mishandled. Proper calcium intake is the primary requirement for healthy, continuous shell development.
