Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is native to the tropical waters of the Central Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Java Sea and the Philippines to northern Australia, and northward to the Ryukyu Islands in southern Japan. It inhabits sheltered coastal bays, shallow coral reefs, and protected lagoons at depths of 1 to 20 meters, staying close to branching corals.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Ostorhinchus luteus belongs to the Apogonidae family (cardinalfishes). It features a short, compact, and laterally compressed body shape. It has large dark eyes adapted for low-light vision and a relatively wide mouth. The two dorsal fins are separate, and the first has a tall, thread-like look. Standard length reaches up to 7 cm.
Social Behavior: It is a highly gregarious, peaceful, and schooling species. During the day, they form small, tight schools that hover almost motionless above or within the branches of Acropora and Porites stony corals. They show no territorial aggression and are completely reef-safe.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body coloration is a uniform, vivid golden-yellow or yellowish-orange. It is decorated with a distinct bluish-grey patch behind the eyes and thin, vertical orange lines on the head. Sexual dimorphism is negligible, with males and females looking virtually identical outside the spawning season.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Aquarium Setup: Requires a mature reef aquarium of at least 100 liters (25 gallons). The tank should be decorated with plenty of live rock forming caves, overhangs, and shady zones where the fish can rest. Providing branching stony corals (SPS like Acropora) is highly beneficial to encourage natural schooling and sheltering behaviors.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. In the wild, it feeds on zooplankton and micro-crustaceans. In captivity, it should be fed a varied diet of small frozen foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and lobster eggs. High-quality dry flakes and small sinking pellets are usually accepted once the fish is settled.
Water Quality: Keep standard marine parameters stable: water temperature between 22°C and 27°C, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025, and KH 8-12. Efficient biological filtration and skimming are necessary to keep nitrates and phosphates low. Moderate to gentle water currents are preferred.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: An excellent addition to any peaceful community reef tank. They must be kept in groups of at least 3 to 5 specimens to prevent stress and promote natural behaviors. Compatible with other docile fish like clownfish, gobies, pipefish, and small blennies. Do not house with large, predatory fish.
Aquarium Breeding: This species is a paternal mouthbrooder. The male carries the fertilized egg mass inside his mouth for about a week, refusing food until the eggs hatch. Spawning in home aquariums is possible, but raising the fry requires a separate rearing tank and feeding them live rotifers and micro-algae.
Risks and Diseases: Hardy and easy to care for once acclimated. It may appear shy initially, hiding in shady areas of the tank. Susceptible to common marine diseases like marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) under stressful conditions or sudden temperature drops, but responds well to standard reef-safe treatments.

Fischprofil
- Temperament
- Peaceful
- They have a very peaceful, somewhat timid temperament and rely on the safety of a group. They are completely reef-safe and ignore corals and ornamental invertebrates. Their calm hovering behavior provides a soothing aesthetic to the marine aquarium.
- Diät
- Carnivore
- They are nocturnal carnivores that naturally feed on zooplankton and small benthic crustaceans. In captivity, they eagerly accept frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality carnivore pellets. Providing a varied, meaty diet is vital for maintaining their bright yellow coloration.
- Lebenserwartung
- 5-8 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 7 cm
- Geschlechterverhältnis
- Solitary
- They are highly social and should absolutely be kept in groups of at least five individuals. Keeping them in a school significantly reduces their shyness and encourages natural shoaling behavior. In large enough groups, they will naturally form pairs for breeding.
- Fütterungsfrequenz
- Twice daily
- They should be fed one to two times daily, preferably when the aquarium lights are dim. Since they are nocturnal, feeding them at twilight encourages their natural hunting behavior. Ensure that food is small enough to fit into their relatively small mouths.
- Bioload
- Low
- The Yellow Cardinalfish produces a minimal to moderate bioload, depending on the size of the school. They process food efficiently, and their waste is easily handled by standard biological filtration. Regular maintenance and a decent protein skimmer ensure water parameters remain highly stable.
- Fluss
- Moderate
- They prefer gentle, low-to-moderate water flow that mimics sheltered lagoons and inner reefs. Strong currents can exhaust them and force them to hide constantly within the rockwork. Creating calm zones in the aquarium allows them to school and hover comfortably.
- Sprungrisiko
- No
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- They are paternal mouthbrooders, a fascinating trait where the male incubates the eggs in his mouth. The male will not eat during this incubation period, which lasts over a week. Raising the fry is possible if the male is isolated and the fry are fed rotifers immediately after release.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- Peaceful
- They are exceptionally peaceful and make wonderful additions to tranquil community tanks. They should be housed with other non-aggressive species to prevent them from being bullied. Avoid keeping them with large, boisterous fish that might outcompete them during feeding times.
- Tankfüllstand
- Middle
- They generally hover in the middle to lower levels of the water column, staying near rock formations. During the day, they often seek refuge under overhangs or within caves. At night or under actinic lighting, they become much more active and venture into open water.
