Spotted Catfish
Arius maculatus
The Spotted Catfish is a large, active, schooling brackish fish. Growing up to 40cm, it needs a massive 400L tank with an open swimming area, fine sand, and a carnivorous diet. Beware of its venomous spines.

Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Arius maculatus, commonly known as the Spotted Catfish, is widely distributed in the warm tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific. Its range encompasses the coasts of India, Pakistan, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia), extending to the Philippines and southern China. It primarily inhabits muddy estuaries, slow-moving tidal rivers, brackish lagoons, and shallow coastal marine zones.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Ariidae (sea catfish), genus Arius, and order Siluriformes. It features an elongated, scaleless, hydrodynamic body with a robust head and three pairs of sensory barbels near the mouth. It reaches a considerable size in adulthood, often between 30 and 40 centimeters in length, requiring very large aquariums.
Social Behavior: An active, schooling species that swims continuously in the lower and middle zones of the water column. It must be kept in groups of at least 3-5 individuals to prevent extreme stress and shy behavior. While peaceful toward fish of similar size, it is an opportunistic predator capable of swallowing smaller tankmates.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The dorsal coloration is silvery-gray with blue or golden metallic reflections, while the belly is white. It frequently displays a characteristic dark spot on the dorsal fin and irregular markings on other fins. There is no obvious external sexual dimorphism; mature females tend to be noticeably plumper and rounder than males.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Aquarium Setup: Requires a very large aquarium with a minimum capacity of 400-500 liters to accommodate a small school of adult fish. The substrate must consist of soft, fine sand to prevent damage to their sensitive barbels. The layout should feature large smooth rocks and sturdy driftwood arranged along the edges, leaving a wide open central area for continuous swimming. A heavy, secure lid is required.
Diet and Feeding: A voracious, opportunistic carnivore. It feeds on small fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and worms. In captivity, it readily accepts frozen foods (mysis, krill, chopped shrimp, mussels, and small baitfish), live foods, and high-quality sinking catfish pellets. Feeding should be regular and well-proportioned to match the high activity levels of the school.
Water Quality: While young juveniles can tolerate fresh water, adults require brackish (recommended specific gravity between 1.005 and 1.015) or full marine conditions to live a healthy, long-term life. Ideal parameters: temperature 23°C-28°C, stable alkaline pH (7.5-8.2), and high GH. Powerful filtration is essential due to the significant biological load produced.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Well-suited for large brackish community tanks with peaceful or moderately territorial large tankmates, such as archerfish (Toxotes), monos (Monodactylus), scats (Scatophagus), and large brackish puffers. Any small community fish or ornamental shrimp will be systematically preyed upon and consumed, particularly during the night.
Aquarium Breeding: It is a paternal mouthbrooder. After fertilization, the male gathers the eggs in his mouth and guards them for 30-40 days until they hatch and the fry fully absorb their yolk sacs. During this time, the male does not feed. Spawning in aquariums is extremely rare due to the vast swimming space required for courtship rituals.
Risks and Diseases: The spines on the dorsal and pectoral fins are venomous and can inflict extremely painful stings to aquarists (handle with extreme caution!). Long-term fresh water exposure in adults leads to barbel erosion, skin infections, and general immune system decline. Salinity stability is vital.

Fischprofil
- Temperament
- Peaceful
- The overall temperament of Arius maculatus can be described as active predator. Understanding their personality is vital for maintaining a peaceful and stress-free environment. They may exhibit unique behaviors when interacting with their surroundings or during feeding time. Careful consideration of their disposition leads to a more rewarding fishkeeping experience.
- Diät
- Carnivore
- The natural diet of Arius maculatus is primarily carnivorous. In captivity, they should be offered a varied selection of high-quality foods to meet their nutritional needs. Incorporating both dry commercial diets and frozen or live options will ensure optimal health and coloration. A varied diet prevents nutritional deficiencies.
- Lebenserwartung
- 10-13 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 30 cm
- Geschlechterverhältnis
- Solitary
- The ideal sex ratio for keeping Arius maculatus is typically solitary. Keeping them in these numbers helps reduce intraspecific aggression and mimics their natural social structure. Providing ample hiding spots can further alleviate tension among dominant individuals. Always monitor the group dynamics when introducing new specimens.
- Fütterungsfrequenz
- Twice daily
- Feeding Arius maculatus should generally be done daily. It is important to provide only what they can consume in a few minutes to prevent leftover food from decaying. Establishing a regular feeding schedule helps keep the fish active and healthy. Adjust the frequency if you observe signs of undernourishment or overfeeding.
- Bioload
- Extreme
- The bioload produced by Arius maculatus is generally considered high. This means that the filtration system must be adequately sized to handle their waste output. Regular water changes and tank maintenance are strongly recommended to keep the environment healthy. Failure to do so can result in poor water quality and stress the fish.
- Fluss
- Strong
- In their natural habitat, Arius maculatus experiences water flow that is high. Replicating this in the aquarium is crucial for their well-being and natural behavior. Appropriate water movement aids in oxygenation and prevents dead spots in the tank. Utilizing adjustable powerheads can help achieve the perfect balance.
- Sprungrisiko
- No
- Reproduktion
- Mouthbrooder
- Regarding reproduction, Arius maculatus is known to be a mouthbrooder. Breeding them in a home aquarium requires specific water parameters and a dedicated setup. Providing the correct spawning media and conditioning the adults with high-quality foods will increase success. Raising the fry can be challenging and requires specialized microscopic foods initially.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- With caution
- When it comes to compatibility, Arius maculatus is characterized as predatory. They should be housed with tank mates that share similar water requirements and temperament. Care must be taken not to include species that could easily become prey or outcompete them for food. Observation is key to ensuring a harmonious community.
- Tankfüllstand
- Bottom
- In the aquarium, Arius maculatus prefers to occupy the bottom level. Designing the aquascape to cater to this preference ensures the fish feel secure and display their best colors. Ensure that there is adequate swimming space and appropriate decor in their preferred zone. This vertical distribution also allows for careful selection of tank mates that occupy other levels.
