Geographical Origin and Habitat: The convict blenny, Pholidichthys leucotaenia (also known as the engineer goby), is native to the Western Central Pacific Ocean, specifically around the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. It inhabits shallow lagoons, coastal reefs, and sandy or rubble flats adjacent to coral formations at depths ranging from 2 to 20 meters. It spends its life inside complex tunnel systems dug beneath the foundations of coral heads.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the class Actinopterygii, order incertae sedis (often linked to Cichliformes), family Pholidichthyidae, and genus Pholidichthys. It features a highly elongated, eel-like body without visible scales, with long dorsal and anal fins that are confluent with the caudal fin. Adults can reach a substantial size of 30 to 40 cm. Despite its common names, it is neither a true blenny nor a goby.
Social Behavior: This is an industrious burrowing species. Juveniles form tight, coordinated schools that swim in open water, mimicking the venomous striped catfish (Plotosus lineatus) for protection. Adults, however, live in pairs and are almost entirely subterranean, working constantly to carry mouthfuls of sand out to clear and expand their tunnel networks, rarely emerging completely.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: This species undergoes a dramatic color transformation as it matures. Juveniles have a striking black body with a white longitudinal stripe, closely resembling Plotosus catfish. Aquarium Setup: Requires a large tank of at least 250 liters for an adult specimen due to its potential size. A deep bed of fine sand (minimum 8-10 cm) is absolutely mandatory to support its burrowing behavior. Crucially, all live rock must be placed directly on the bottom glass of the aquarium before adding sand to prevent tunnels from causing rock collapses that could break the glass.
Diet and Feeding: An opportunistic omnivore. In the aquarium, it eagerly consumes meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, and fish pieces. It will also accept sinking dry pellets and granulates. Juveniles feed in the water column, while adults will dart out of their burrow entrance to grab passing food or forage on the sand nearby.
Water Quality: Very hardy and tolerant of varying conditions. Maintain typical marine parameters: temperature between 23°C and 27°C, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. Standard filtration is sufficient to handle the waste of a larger fish, and adequate water movement prevents stagnant zones near the sandy floor.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Very peaceful toward tankmates. It is reef-safe and will not harm corals, but fully grown adults may accidentally consume very small bottom-dwelling gobies or tiny ornamental shrimp if they wander near the burrow entrance. It coexists well with tangs, damselfish, and angelfish. Avoid housing with other competitive burrowing fish.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums has occurred in large systems. The pair spawns inside their deep tunnels, where they care for the eggs and newly hatched larvae, which remain in the burrow for the first few days. The juveniles eventually emerge as a tight-knit school and can be raised on rotifers and artemia nauplii.
Risks and Diseases: Highly disease-resistant and rarely contracts typical marine ailments if water quality is stable. The primary hazard is structural; failing to secure live rocks on the bottom glass can lead to rockslides due to the fish's constant excavation, which can crush the fish or crack the aquarium glass. Always ensure the rockwork is secure.
