Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is native to Southeast Asia, distributed primarily in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and surrounding islands. It inhabits warm, humid tropical rainforests, swamps, marshes, and agricultural areas, particularly oil palm plantations where rodents are abundant. It is a terrestrial reptile that enjoys burrowing in mud or damp leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belonging to the family Pythonidae, genus Python. The 'Batik' is a co-dominant genetic mutation of the Brongersma's short-tailed python (Python brongersmai). This mutation alters the typical body pattern, reducing lateral markings to create a shattered, pixelated look. Breeding two Batiks produces a homozygous form ('Super Batik') which often suffers from developmental issues.
Behavior and Habits: It is a terrestrial, crepuscular ambush predator. It spends most of its time hidden in the substrate or water, waiting for prey to pass and capturing it via constriction. It has a very strong feeding response. While captive-bred specimens can be managed easily with regular contact, they remain alert and require a calm approach.
Morphology: Features an extremely robust, heavy-bodied build with a short tail. The head is broad and distinct from the neck. The coloration of the Batik morph shows shades of red, orange, and brown arranged in a scattered, mosaic pattern resembling the Batik dyeing technique. Adults typically reach 1.5-1.8 meters in length and carry significant weight.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a very sturdy, horizontally oriented enclosure measuring at least 120x60x50 cm for an adult. The substrate must hold moisture without rotting; cypress mulch, coconut husk, or peat are excellent choices. Avoid dusty substrates. Provide a large, dark hide where the snake can feel secure and completely concealed.
Lighting and Heating: Heating should be provided via a thermostat-controlled radiant heat panel or heat mat to ensure a hot spot temperature of 30-32°C (86-90°F) and a cool zone of 25-26°C (77-79°F). Never allow temperatures to drop below 24°C (75°F) at night. UVB lighting is not mandatory, but a 12-hour cycle using LED lights supports circadian rhythms.
Humidity and Hydration: Humidity must be kept high, between 60% and 75%. This is achieved by regularly misting the substrate and providing a very large, heavy water bowl (to prevent tipping) where the snake can fully submerge, a behavior that is particularly common before shedding.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly carnivorous diet. Feed adults appropriate-sized prey (thawed rats or mice) every 10-14 days using long metal feeding tongs. Avoid overfeeding, as this species has a slow metabolism and is prone to obesity in captivity. Supplements are not necessary if feeding healthy, high-quality rodents.
Compatibility: This snake must be housed strictly alone. It is a solitary animal that does not benefit from social interaction. Keeping multiple specimens in the same enclosure will cause severe stress and can trigger aggressive competition over food and basking spots.
Health and Common Diseases: Key health risks include respiratory infections if the enclosure is kept too cold and damp, and scale rot (dermatitis) if the substrate remains wet and soiled. Spot-clean waste immediately and perform regular substrate changes. Handle with care due to the snake's heavy body and powerful constriction.

Perfil de réptil
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- Blood pythons are ambush predators that rely on camouflage to catch passing prey. Their natural diet includes rodents, ground-dwelling birds, and occasionally other small mammals. In captivity, they thrive on a steady diet of appropriately sized rats, adjusting to larger prey as they rapidly gain girth. Due to their slow metabolism, feeding schedules should be carefully monitored to prevent obesity.
- Tamanho adulto
- 150 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- Strictly terrestrial and robustly built, they are not adept at climbing. They prefer to stay concealed on the forest floor and thrive in environments with deep substrate and high humidity.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Crepuscular
- Blood pythons are highly crepuscular and nocturnal ambush predators. They spend long periods hiding beneath leaf litter or in the underbrush, waiting for prey to pass by.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- Blood pythons have a reputation for being somewhat defensive or short-tempered, especially as juveniles, though they can tame down with consistent and gentle handling. They are highly terrestrial and relatively inactive, preferring to lie perfectly still in leaf litter or hide boxes rather than climbing or exploring. Their ambush strategy requires patience, and they often stay submerged in shallow water or mud in their natural habitat.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- These heavy-bodied snakes are oviparous and reproduce by laying clutches of up to 30 eggs, depending on the female's size and health. The female is highly protective of her clutch, wrapping her thick body around the eggs and "shivering" to generate heat for proper incubation. After about 60 to 70 days, fully developed hatchlings emerge, already possessing their robust body shape.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Expert only
- While historically known for being defensive, captive-bred individuals can become quite tractable with patient and consistent handling. However, their heavy bodies require proper support, and they are best suited for experienced keepers.
- Brumação
- This tropical species does not undergo brumation. They require consistently warm and humid conditions year-round, although slight nighttime temperature drops are acceptable.
- Muda
- Periodic
- High humidity is absolutely essential for a successful molt. Misting the enclosure or providing a humid hide is critical, as dry conditions easily lead to stuck shed, particularly around their eyes and tail.
