Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the southeastern United States. They inhabit open woodlands, agricultural fields, grasslands, and suburban areas. They are terrestrial and semi-arboreal, frequently climbing trees or entering barns in search of rodents.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belonging to the family Colubridae. Commonly known as the Corn Snake, its name originates either from the checkered belly pattern resembling Indian corn or its presence in corn cribs where it hunts pests.
Behavior and Habits: Crepuscular and nocturnal. They are widely celebrated for their docile temperament, rarely biting in defense. They are active climbers and persistent escape artists, requiring escape-proof enclosures. If threatened, they may vibrate their tail to mimic a rattlesnake.
Morphology: Can reach 120–150 cm in length. Males and females look very similar externally. Males generally have slightly longer tails that are thicker at the base due to the presence of hemipenes, which can be verified by probing.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: A secure horizontal enclosure (minimum 100x45x45 cm) is required. Must be fitted with a lock or secure clips. Use a dry, burrowing substrate such as aspen shavings or dry coco fiber. Provide at least two tight hiding spots (one on the warm side, one on the cool side) and sturdy branches for climbing.
Lighting and Heating: cool side at 22–24°C, warm side floor at 30–32°C using a thermostat-controlled heating mat. Drop temperatures to 20–22°C at night. A low-output (2–5%) UVB bulb is recommended for physiological benefits.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain moderate humidity levels of 40–50%. Provide a large water bowl for drinking and soaking. During the shedding process, introduce a humid hide filled with damp moss to ensure a complete, single-piece shed.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strict carnivores. Feed exclusively frozen-thawed mice of appropriate size (no wider than the widest part of the snake's body). Feed hatchlings every 5–7 days and adults every 10–14 days. Do not handle the snake for 48 hours after feeding to prevent regurgitation.
Compatibility: Strictly solitary. House individually to prevent stress and accidental cannibalism.
Health and Common Diseases: Unregulated heating pads can cause severe thermal burns. Incomplete sheds (dysecdysis) can constrict tail tips if a humid hide is not provided. Never feed live rodents, as they can bite and injure the snake.

Perfil de réptil
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- Corn snakes are strict carnivores that feed primarily on rodents. In captivity, they should be offered appropriately sized frozen-thawed mice or rats, with the prey item being no wider than the snake's thickest part. Hatchlings require frequent feedings of pinky mice, while adults only need to be fed once every one to two weeks to maintain a healthy weight.

- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- They are semi-arboreal and terrestrial constrictors that inhabit varied environments including forests, fields, and abandoned buildings. Their enclosure should provide a secure environment with tight-fitting lids, as they are notorious escape artists. A temperature gradient with a warm basking spot and a cooler end, along with multiple hiding spots, is crucial for thermoregulation.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Crepuscular
- Corn snakes are primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, being most active during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk. During the heat of the day, they prefer to stay hidden in secure, dark hides or burrows. However, captive individuals often adapt to their owner's schedule and may be seen exploring their enclosure during daylight hours.
- Socialidade
- Gregarious
- These snakes are known for their docile, inquisitive, and generally non-aggressive temperament, making them ideal for both beginners and experienced keepers. When feeling threatened, they may rapidly vibrate their tail against dry leaves to mimic the sound of a rattlesnake. They are active explorers that enjoy investigating their surroundings and utilizing climbing branches.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Corn snakes are oviparous, with females laying clutches of 10 to 30 leathery eggs in a warm, damp location after a successful mating. The eggs incubate for about 60 days before the neonate snakes slice through the shells using a specialized egg tooth. Hatchlings are fully independent upon emerging and possess the instinct to hunt immediately.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Tolerant
- Corn snakes are highly tolerant of regular handling and typically become very tame with consistent, gentle interaction. When picking them up, support the middle of their body and allow them to glide freely through your hands rather than gripping them tightly. It is best to avoid handling them for at least 48 hours after feeding to prevent regurgitation.
- Brumação
- Obrigatório
- In the wild, they experience a period of winter dormancy or brumation when temperatures drop. While captive breeding usually requires a 60-90 day brumation period at cooler temperatures, pet corn snakes do not need to brumate. If standard indoor temperatures are maintained, they will remain active and continue feeding throughout the year.
- Muda
- Regular
- As they grow, corn snakes will periodically shed their skin in one continuous piece, a process known as ecdysis. Prior to shedding, their eyes will turn a cloudy blue color, and they may refuse food and seek out a humid hide. Providing a moist hide box during this time is essential to ensure the skin sheds completely, particularly around the eyes and tail tip.
