African Bullfrog
Pyxicephalus adspersus
The African Bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus), or Pixie Frog, is one of the largest frogs in the world. Males are massive and territorial, possessing bone-like odontoid projections in the lower jaw.

Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed across the dry savannas, grasslands, and shrublands of Eastern and Southern Africa. They spend the dry season estivating underground in a cocoon made of dead skin layers to prevent desiccation, emerging in large numbers with the heavy rains of the wet season.
Taxonomy and Genetics: An incredibly large and heavily built frog. Adult males can reach 25–30 cm in length and weigh over 1.4 kg, featuring an olive-green coloration and yellow throat. They possess tooth-like projections (odontoids) in the lower jaw used to secure prey. Females are significantly smaller, rarely exceeding 12 cm.
Behavior and Habits: Territorial and highly aggressive, especially males defending their breeding pools or offspring. Unlike most frogs, male African bullfrogs actively guard their tadpoles and will dig channels to prevent pools from drying out. They are ambush predators with a ravenous appetite.
Morphology: This species exhibits male-biased sexual dimorphism, which is rare in anurans. Males are more than double the size and weight of females, with bright yellow or orange coloration around the throat, whereas females are smaller, duller, and brownish.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a large, heavy-duty enclosure with simple decor, as these frogs are powerful diggers and will uproot plants. Provide a deep layer (10–15 cm) of moist coco coir or organic soil for burrowing. A large, sturdy, and shallow water bowl must be provided and kept clean.
Lighting and Heating: Needs a temperature gradient of 25–29°C, with a warm spot up to 32°C. A heating mat or ceramic heat emitter can be used. Stagnant cold temperatures can lead to digestive stasis or respiratory infections. Provide a standard photoperiod using mild LED lighting.
Humidity and Hydration: Humidity should be kept around 60–80%. Mist the enclosure regularly to keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged. Clean, declorinated water is essential as their permeable skin easily absorbs toxins.
Feeding and Supplementation: Highly opportunistic carnivores that will attempt to eat anything that fits in their mouth. Offer a diet of roaches, crickets, earthworms, and occasionally small fish or rodents (once a month). Dust food with calcium and multivitamins regularly.
Compatibility: Must be housed individually. They are highly cannibalistic and will readily eat smaller frogs, including their own species. Males are highly territorial and will fight aggressively if kept together.
Health and Common Diseases: Snout rubbing against enclosure walls is common under stress, leading to abrasions and bacterial infections. Poor hygiene can cause toxic shock syndrome from waste buildup. They can deliver a painful bite due to their jaw strength and odontoid bones, so use tongs for feeding.

Perfil anfíbio
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- The diet of Pyxicephalus adspersus must be carefully managed to ensure optimal health and longevity. In its natural habitat, Pyxicephalus adspersus typically consumes a variety of specific prey items or plant matter. Captive specimens require a similarly balanced intake, often supplemented with essential vitamins and calcium. It is important to offer food that is appropriately sized to avoid choking or digestive issues. Regular monitoring of their feeding response helps in identifying any potential health problems early.
- Expectativa de vida
- 15-40 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 17 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- The lifestyle of Pyxicephalus adspersus varies greatly depending on whether they are terrestrial, arboreal, aquatic, or semi-aquatic. Designing an enclosure that accommodates their specific mode of living is essential for their physical and mental health. This includes providing the right substrate, climbing branches, or water features as needed. A proper setup allows Pyxicephalus adspersus to exercise, hide, and thermoregulate effectively. Understanding their lifestyle choices helps in creating a thriving captive environment.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Crepuscular
- The activity pattern of Pyxicephalus adspersus typically dictates when they feed, explore, and rest. Depending on their biology, they may be predominantly active during the day, night, or twilight hours. Replicating appropriate lighting and temperature cycles is crucial for maintaining their natural rhythm. Disruptions to this schedule can lead to stress and a decline in the health of Pyxicephalus adspersus. Keepers should try to interact with them during their most active periods to minimize disturbance.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- The behavior of Pyxicephalus adspersus is deeply influenced by its natural instincts and environment. These creatures exhibit unique social and territorial behaviors that must be respected in captivity. Providing a habitat that mimics their wild surroundings can greatly reduce stress and encourage natural activities. Pyxicephalus adspersus may show specific defensive or communicative displays when interacting with its environment. Observing these behaviors is key to understanding their overall well-being and comfort.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Reproduction in Pyxicephalus adspersus requires specific environmental triggers such as temperature and humidity changes. Breeding these animals in captivity can be challenging and often demands a dedicated setup. Once successful mating occurs, careful attention must be given to the incubation of eggs or the care of live young. The offspring of Pyxicephalus adspersus are usually fragile and require highly specific conditions to thrive. Keepers must thoroughly research their reproductive cycle to achieve positive breeding results.
- Toxicidade
- Harmless
- African bullfrogs do not possess the toxic skin secretions found in poison dart frogs or toads, relying on physical defense instead. However, they do secrete a significant amount of protective mucus to keep their skin moist when not cocooned. While completely non-toxic to humans, handling them without clean, wet hands can damage their delicate skin layer. Their main hazard is not poison, but rather their shockingly powerful bite, which can easily draw blood.
- Estágio de vida
- Metamorphosis
- The life cycle begins with rapid development in temporary rain pools. The eggs hatch into large, incredibly aggressive tadpoles that will readily cannibalize one another if food is scarce. They metamorphose quickly into juvenile frogs to escape the evaporating pools before the dry season begins. Once on land, these juveniles eat ferociously, experiencing a massive growth spurt before burying themselves to await the next rains.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- With caution
- Handling should be kept to a minimum. They can be extremely defensive, possess powerful jaws with odontodes (bony teeth-like projections), and will not hesitate to bite if they feel cornered.
- Brumação
- In the wild, they undergo aestivation during dry seasons, forming a hardened cocoon of shed skin to retain moisture. In captivity, a minor cooling period can be simulated, but deep aestivation is usually unnecessary.
- Muda
- Regular
- They shed their skin regularly and typically use their front limbs to pull the shed into their mouths and eat it. Adequate substrate moisture ensures the process goes smoothly.
