Diodia cf. kuntzei
Diodia cf. kuntzei
Diodia cf. kuntzei is an unusual, structural stem plant from South America. Its opposite leaves and rigid, branched growth form striking architectural thickets in the midground of aquascapes.

Description de l'espèce
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species originates from South America, where it grows along the humid banks of rivers, marshes, and temporarily flooded soils. It is accustomed to living both in emersed environments with high humidity and completely submerged during seasonal floods, showing excellent tolerance to environmental fluctuations.
Taxonomy & Genetics: It belongs to the family Rubiaceae, a plant family uncommon in the aquarium hobby but which includes well-known terrestrial plants such as coffee. The specific affinity with 'kuntzei' is indicated by 'cf.' (compare to) due to uncertainties in the exact cataloging of aquatic species of the genus Diodia.
Physical Structure: It is an erect or prostrate stem plant. The stems are thin but flexible and bear leaves arranged in opposite pairs along the nodes. Under the water surface, it develops a branched structure that tends to form dense bushes if pruned regularly. The height typically ranges between 20 and 40 cm.
Color & Texture: The leaves have an olive-green or forest-green hue. Under strong lighting and with a good supply of nutrients, the stems and upper leaves can develop interesting bronze-reddish tones. The leaves are lanceolate, soft to the touch, and have a smooth surface.

Lighting & CO2: Requires moderate to intense lighting. If the light is weak, the internodes stretch excessively and the lower leaves risk falling off. The addition of CO2 is highly recommended to support healthy growth and to obtain more intense colors.
Nutrition & Substrate: Needs a good nutritional intake both through the roots and in the
Water Chemistry: Prefers temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. It adapts to neutral or slightly acidic pH values (6.0 - 7.5) and requires medium-low water hardness to prevent stem rigidity and leaf fragility.
Space Management & Placement: The best placement is in the midground or background of the aquarium, planted in small spaced groups. It should not be positioned too close to other ultra-fast growing stem plants that could easily shade it.
Pruning: It is pruned like most stem plants: by cutting the top above a node and replanting the cut part in the substrate. This operation encourages the development of lateral shoots from the remaining stem, creating a bushier and more compact clump.
Risks & Diseases: The main risk is the loss of basal leaves due to poor light penetration or macroelement deficiencies. Additionally, the stems can rot at the base if planted too close to each other, limiting water flow.

Profil de plante
- Emplacement
- Plan intermédiaire
- Best utilized in the midground or background depending on how it is trimmed. Its unique, stiff, and needle-like leaves offer a distinct texture that stands out in the aquascape. It should be planted in an open area with unobstructed, high-intensity lighting.
- Forme botanique
- Tige
- Features very stiff, narrow, needle-like leaves that grow in opposing pairs along a rigid stem. The leaves are typically a bright, fresh green and have a somewhat spiky appearance. Its rigid structure makes it quite unique among aquatic stem plants.
- Croissance
- Moyenne
- Exhibits a moderate to fast growth rate when provided with optimal conditions, including strong light and CO2 injection. Its vertical growth is steady, and it requires regular maintenance to prevent it from reaching the surface too quickly. Without CO2, its growth is significantly impaired.
- Substrat
- Moyen
- Diodia cf. kuntzei performs well in a medium-grade substrate that offers a balanced supply of essential nutrients. A standard fine gravel enriched with root tabs or a commercial aqua soil creates an ideal growing foundation. It requires about 4 centimeters of substrate to anchor its stems and promote a healthy root network. The roots steadily draw in micronutrients from the bed, complementing foliar feeding and encouraging vigorous side shoots.
- Fertilisation de la colonne d'eau
- Recommandée
- Demands consistent and thorough liquid fertilization to maintain its vibrant green color and structural integrity. Adequate levels of iron and trace elements are crucial to prevent the leaves from washing out. A well-rounded dosing schedule will keep the plant robust.
- Fertilisation racinaire
- Recommandée
- Greatly benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate like aquasoil, which supports strong root development. While it absorbs nutrients well through its leaves, a fertile root zone provides stability and a secondary nutrient source. Root tabs can be used to boost growth in established tanks.
- Taille
- Occasionnelle
- Tolerates trimming well, which is necessary to maintain a bushy shape and control its height. Cutting the tops will encourage the stem to produce lateral shoots. The stiff stems require sharp scissors to ensure a clean cut without crushing the tissue.
- Propagation
- Boutures
- Propagated easily through stem cuttings. Simply snip the healthy top portions and replant them directly into the substrate. Ensure adequate spacing between the stems to allow light to reach the lower foliage.
- Sensibilité
- Modérée
- A demanding plant that requires stable, optimal conditions to thrive. It is sensitive to shading and will lose its lower leaves if light penetration is poor. It also demands high CO2 levels and clean, well-circulated water to prevent algae issues on its stiff leaves.
- Rôle dans le décor
- Plan intermédiaire, Arrière-plan
- Serves as a striking textural accent in the midground or background. Its stiff, needle-like foliage provides an excellent contrast to softer, broad-leaved plants or fine mosses. It is a fantastic choice for adding structural diversity to a planted aquarium.
