Geographical Origin and Habitat: Trochus histrio is widespread throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, including the waters of the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the Western Pacific Ocean to northern Australia. It inhabits shallow intertidal zones and coral reefs, often in areas exposed to strong surge and wave action where direct sunlight promotes rapid growth of benthic algae on rocks and dead coral rubble.
Taxonomy: Belongs to the class Gastropoda, family Trochidae, and genus Trochus. Described by Reeve in 1842, this species is distinguished from other members of the genus by its shell ornamentation. The taxonomy of Trochidae is primarily based on shell morphology and the structure of the radula, which is adapted for scraping algae from hard surfaces.
Social Behavior: A completely peaceful and reef-safe invertebrate that does not harm other tank inhabitants. It spends its time actively crawling over rocks, glass, and equipment to graze on algae. It exhibits nocturnal tendencies but is often active during the day if food is abundant. It does not show any territorial behavior.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The shell is heavy, conical, and pyramidal, characterized by irregular pink, red, white, and greyish-brown radial stripes that provide excellent camouflage. There is no visible external sexual dimorphism; reproduction occurs via broadcast spawning, where gametes are released into the water column for external fertilization.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Tank Setup: A mature marine aquarium of at least 50 liters is required, containing stable live rock for the snail to graze on. Ensure that rockwork is firmly placed, as the snail is strong enough to push over loose pieces. Unlike some other snails, Trochus histrio is capable of uprighting itself if it falls onto its back on the sand, significantly reducing mortality.
Diet and Feeding: A strict herbivore and excellent algae scraper. It feeds on green filamentous algae, diatoms, and film algae covering the rocks and glass. In clean or newly setup aquariums, they may starve; in such cases, supplement their diet by attaching dried nori seaweed to a clip or dropping spirulina pellets near them.
Water Quality: Like all marine mollusks, it is highly sensitive to rapid salinity shifts and copper, which is lethal even in trace amounts. Ideal parameters are: temperature between 22°C and 28°C, pH of 8.1 to 8.4, specific gravity of 1.023 to 1.025, and alkalinity between 8 and 12 dKH. Adequate calcium (400-440 ppm) and magnesium (1250-1350 ppm) are vital for shell growth.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Completely compatible with corals and peaceful fish. Do not house with mollusk-eating predators such as pufferfish, triggerfish, certain wrasses, or aggressive hermit crabs that might kill the snail for its meat or shell. It coexists peacefully with other herbivorous snails and urchins.
Aquarium Breeding: One of the few marine snails that can spawn successfully in home aquaria. Spawning is often triggered by water changes and occurs when snails release eggs and sperm into the water column. The planktonic larvae settle onto the rocks as tiny snails within a few days, contributing to a self-sustaining clean-up crew.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation due to lack of algae or overstocking is the primary risk. Thinning or eroding shells indicate low calcium levels or low pH. It cannot tolerate copper- or formalin-based medications; if treatments are necessary for fish, the snails must be moved to a separate quarantine tank.
