Description de l'espèce
Mutant Translucent Morph. A rare genetic variant where the skin is pale, translucent, and opalescent.:
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Terrestrial and burrowing species distributed in the semi-arid region of the Gran Chaco (Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil). They inhabit dry savannas and scrublands, spending dry periods buried underground in estivation.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Large, round body reaching 10-15 cm in females. The head is very large with a wide mouth and small skin projections or horns above the eyes. This mutant morph features pale, translucent, and slightly opalescent skin.
Behavior and Habits: Extremely sedentary, burrowing sit-and-wait predator. They spend most of the day buried in the substrate. Active at night. Males produce a loud, bark-like call during the rainy season.
Morphology: Females are significantly larger and heavier than males. Mature males have darker throats and develop nuptial pads on their thumbs.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Terrarium Setup: Requires a horizontal terrestrial terrarium (minimum 60x45x30 cm). Provide a deep, burrowable substrate of damp coco-fiber or peat moss. Include a large, very shallow water bowl. Avoid sharp rocks.
Lighting and Heating: Maintain temperatures between 26-28°C during the day using a low-wattage heat source. Do not use under-tank heating as they burrow to cool down. Provide 5% UVB lighting.
Humidity and Hydration: Keep humidity levels around 60-70%. The substrate should be moist but never soggy to prevent bacterial infections. Mist regularly with dechlorinated water.
Feeding and Supplementation: Voracious predators. Feed crickets, roaches, earthworms, and occasional feeder fish or pinky mice. Use tongs to feed to prevent substrate ingestion. Supplement with calcium and D3.
Compatibility: Strictly solitary and highly cannibalistic. Never house two specimens together.
Health and Common Diseases: Prone to toxicities from accumulated waste; replace substrate regularly. Ensure correct calcium and D3 supplementation to prevent metabolic bone disease.

Profil d'amphibien
- Régime alimentaire
- Carnivore
- The diet of Ceratophrys cranwelli "Mutant Translucent" consists mainly of appropriately sized prey or specific plant matter, depending on its natural biology. Providing a varied and nutrient-rich diet is essential for maintaining their immune system and overall health. Owners must ensure that all food items are properly dusted with high-quality calcium and vitamin D3 supplements to prevent severe metabolic issues. Fresh, clean water should also be accessible at all times to aid in digestion.
- Espérance de vie
- 8-15 years
- Taille adulte
- 14 cm
- Mode de vie/microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- Adapting uniquely to their environment, Ceratophrys cranwelli "Mutant Translucent" exhibits a lifestyle that necessitates specific terrarium setups to thrive in captivity. Whether climbing, burrowing, or dwelling on the forest floor, their habitat must replicate the structural elements they utilize in the wild. Proper gradients of temperature and humidity are also essential to support their physiological processes. A well-enriched environment will significantly improve their quality of life and longevity.
- Cycle d'activité
- Nocturnal
- The activity pattern of Ceratophrys cranwelli "Mutant Translucent" is closely tied to its natural habitat's lighting and temperature cycles. They tend to have specific peak hours of activity during which they hunt, forage, and explore their environment. Providing a consistent and naturalistic light cycle with appropriate UVB lighting is critical for regulating their circadian rhythms. During their resting periods, they will seek out secure hides to remain undisturbed.
- Sociabilité
- Gregarious
- Ceratophrys cranwelli "Mutant Translucent" displays a range of fascinating behaviors that are deeply rooted in their evolutionary adaptations for survival. They can be territorial, especially among males, so appropriate enclosure sizing and solitary housing are often recommended to prevent stress and injury. They utilize complex body language to communicate with other members of their species and to deter potential threats. Observing these natural behaviors in a well-designed terrarium is highly rewarding for keepers.
- Reproduction
- Oviparous
- Breeding Ceratophrys cranwelli "Mutant Translucent" generally requires carefully controlled environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity cycling to stimulate natural reproductive behaviors. Females will often need an increase in calcium intake to safely produce and lay healthy clutches of eggs. Once laid, eggs must be promptly moved to an incubator set to the precise temperatures required for optimal development. Careful monitoring of both the breeding adults and the incubating eggs is crucial for successful reproduction.
- Toxicité
- Harmless
- Cranwell's horned frogs completely lack any skin toxins or poisonous physiological secretions. Their primary defense relies entirely on remarkable camouflage to completely avoid visual detection. Their only potential danger to handlers is a painful bite from powerful, tooth-lined jaws.
- Stade de vie
- Adult only
- Their rapid lifecycle starts with eggs hatching into muscular and voracious aquatic tadpoles. Metamorphosis is remarkably fast and usually fully completes within just 3 to 5 weeks. Terrestrial froglets immediately begin eating large insect prey and grow at astonishing rates.
- Tolérance aux manipulations
- Display only
- Pacman frogs possess highly sensitive skin that absorbs harmful chemicals and natural human oils. Handling should be strictly minimized to prevent extreme stress and severe health issues. They are very prone to biting handlers due to their aggressive feeding responses.
- Brumation
- Non requise
- They naturally undergo a period of estivation during harsh dry seasons in native scrublands. They survive by burrowing deep into the earth and encasing themselves in shed skin cocoons. In warm and well-watered captivity, they remain active year-round without needing estivation.
- Mue
- Yes
- They regularly shed their epidermal layer to maintain healthy skin and remove external parasites. The frog performs exaggerated stretching and wiping motions with its legs to loosen old skin. They continuously push the molted skin toward their mouth and swallow it.
