Deforestation, agricultural expansion, and habitat fragmentation represent severe threats to the long-term survival of its wild populations.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Taxonomically, it belongs to the family Ceratobatrachidae and the genus Platymantis. The species is characterized by an evolutionary lineage highly adapted to a terrestrial lifestyle. A key evolutionary trait of this taxon is direct development, completely bypassing the free-swimming aquatic tadpole stage. Genetic and phylogenetic studies show a close relationship with other members of the Platymantis guentheri group, sharing convergent morphological traits driven by the colonization of isolated montane ecological niches.
Behavior and Habits: This is a strictly nocturnal and highly cryptic amphibian. It spends daylight hours concealed beneath leaf litter, damp moss, or within deep wet rock crevices, beneath moss-covered stones on cliff edges, or inside canyon cavities to prevent desiccation and avoid predators. During the rainy season, males become highly active and vocalize from vertical wet rock faces, overhanging cliff ledges, or from damp aerial roots near canyons to attract mates and establish territories. Their advertisement call is described as a loud, echoing bark-like call, repeated forcefully during night-time mountain rainstorms. Social interactions are largely restricted to breeding events, while during the rest of the year, they lead solitary and territorial lives.
Morphology: The species displays a large and robust for the genus body size. Adults reach a snout-vent length (SVL) of approximately 28.3 e 39.1 mm in males and 49.8 e 52.7 mm in females, demonstrating marked sexual size dimorphism, with females being nearly double the weight of males. Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Terrarium Setup: To house this species, a naturalistic terrarium replicating the Philippine montane rainforest environment is required. For a small group, an enclosure measuring at least 60x45x60 cm is recommended, preferably with vertical with a wet back rock wall orientation. The substrate must consist of a well-draining mix of coconut fiber, peat moss, and bark, topped with a thick layer of leaf litter (such as oak or magnolia leaves) and sphagnum moss to retain moisture. The enclosure should be furnished with vertically arranged limestone rocks, hardy epiphytic plants, and a drip system to keep the rock wall wet, along with live broad-leaved plants like Pothos or Bromeliads, providing shade and secure hideouts.
Lighting and Heating: Being a nocturnal species, it does not require high-intensity lighting, but a regular 12-hour photoperiod should be provided. A low-output UVB source (such as 2.0 or 5.0) is recommended to promote vitamin D3 synthesis and support live plant growth. Daytime temperatures must be kept cool, ranging between 20°C and 24°C, with a localized basking spot not exceeding 25°C. At night, a drop to 16-18°C is essential to replicate the natural temperature fluctuations of high-altitude montane habitats.
Humidity and Hydration: Relative humidity must be kept consistently high, ideally maintained between 80% and 95% during the day, and approaching 100% at night. This can be achieved by misting the enclosure twice daily with dechlorinated or reverse osmosis water to prevent mineral buildup. A shallow water dish with clean water must always be present on the substrate, with water replaced daily. It is critical to avoid waterlogging the substrate, which requires a proper drainage layer and good ventilation to prevent mold and bacterial skin infections.
Feeding and Supplementation: The diet must be strictly insectivorous, consisting of live prey sized appropriately for the frog's mouth. Small crickets, fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster or D. hydei), springtails, isopods, and micro roaches are excellent choices. Adults should be fed 3-4 times a week, while juveniles require daily feedings. It is essential to dust the prey with calcium powder at every feeding and with a high-quality calcium + vitamin D3 + multivitamin supplement (including vitamin A) twice a week to prevent Metabolic Bone Disease.
Compatibility: This species is generally peaceful but males can be territorial, displaying vocal aggression and occasional physical sparring if space is limited. Housed singly or in established pairs (one male and one female) is recommended, or small harems in very spacious enclosures with plenty of visual barriers. Co-housing with other amphibian species is strictly discouraged to eliminate the risk of predation (on smaller tankmates) and the transmission of novel pathogens to which they have no immunity.
Health and Common Diseases: The health of this amphibian depends heavily on terrarium hygiene and stable environmental parameters. Because their skin is highly permeable, they are extremely sensitive to chemical toxins, and all water used must be completely dechlorinated. Common issues include bacterial skin infections (such as red leg syndrome) caused by dirty substrates or stagnant air, and metabolic bone disease due to insufficient calcium or UVB exposure. Direct handling should be avoided unless strictly necessary, and should only be done using clean, wet, powder-free latex gloves.
