DC Runner 2.3

Aqua Medic DC Runner 2.3 is an adjustable universal pump from the x.3 family for circulation and return duties in marine or freshwater aquariums, supplied with a controller and able to use official wireless-network app control for routine operation.

Overview

This model belongs to the x point three generation documented by Aqua Medic and must not be confused with earlier series or similarly named Smart pumps. It is a low-voltage pump with an encapsulated synchronous motor, saltwater-resistant materials, magnetic rotor coupling and an external controller. This profile preserves those sound concepts from the dossiers while rebuilding every precise value from official sources.

Its main task is to move water at an adjustable rate. It can act as a sump return, provide circulation in a compatible loop or feed a properly designed hydraulic branch. The model name alone does not determine aquarium volume. Static head, friction, bends, fittings and required delivered flow remain part of sizing, and each installation changes the operating point.

Selection and uses

Selection should begin with the operating point: the flow required after vertical rise and resistance through the plumbing. Maximum flow at open discharge is not the flow available through a real return line. This profile therefore removes dossier estimates for aquarium volume and claimed real-world delivery. Without a system curve and measurement, those numbers cannot be transferred reliably from one aquarium to another.

The pump is suitable when its connections, head capability and control range cover the design with reasonable margin and without improvised restrictions. Adjustable output supports final tuning after commissioning, but cannot repair undersized pipework, a blocked intake or a drain unable to accept the return. The same hydraulic checks apply in marine and freshwater systems, although deposits and cleaning frequency can differ.

Operation and control

The motor transfers motion to the impeller through magnetic coupling. The supplied controller sits between power supply and pump, changes output with local controls and shows the selected level on its display. The official app adds network control, day-long schedules, manual operation and grouped pumps. Essential control remains available locally, so routine operation does not have to depend entirely on a phone.

The external control input is a separate option and needs the cable specified by the manufacturer. The manual sets a particular minimum command when this signal is used because lower operation can damage the pump; it also excludes very short pulses because of starting delay. Those boundaries must not be confused with the ordinary adjustment range offered by the controller and app.

Compatibility and connections

Aqua Medic documents both submerged and external installation. External use still requires genuinely watertight plumbing and a continuously flooded intake. The pump protection rating does not extend to controller, plugs or sockets, which must remain dry. Suction and pressure connection sizes are shared facts in the table and should be compared with the actual unions, valves and pipe selected for the system.

The official page identifies a controller, motor block, complete impeller, housing seal and ceramic bearing insert specific to this model. Matching the complete item code prevents accidental use of parts for an earlier generation or adjacent size. The extension lead and external-control lead are optional accessories rather than assumed box contents, so their suitability should be confirmed before purchase.

Installation and safety

Before starting, mount the pump without stress on its connections, inspect seals and union nuts, keep the intake open and fill the hydraulic circuit. Place power supply and controller in a dry, ventilated position protected from splashes. Disconnect power before reaching into the water or opening the pump body. The cable must not be altered, and cable damage makes the pump unfit for continued operation.

The pump may operate only with water. Its controller can detect a dry condition and stop the system, but that function does not authorise dry testing or replace level checks. An external installation should avoid trapped air, intakes that can lose prime and closed valves. After commissioning, observe leaks, abnormal sound, delivered flow and stable restart before leaving the system unattended.

Cleaning and diagnosis

Routine maintenance covers the intake basket, impeller, ceramic shaft, bearing seats and hydraulic passages. The manual describes removing base and basket, withdrawing the complete impeller, rinsing it and reassembling it with the shaft correctly located in its bearing. It gives no universal calendar. Debris, mineral scale, biofilm and changes in sound or flow determine when inspection is needed.

The display distinguishes overcurrent, excess temperature, dry operation, a blocked impeller and overvoltage. The initial response is to stop, check water level, supply, ventilation and free impeller movement, and clean where directed. If an error returns, the manual refers the owner to the dealer. It does not permit electronic repair, motor modification or repeated forced restarting.

Strengths and limitations

Verified strengths include local adjustment, app programming, correctly arranged submerged or external use, low voltage at the pump, identified service parts and saltwater-resistant materials. Adjustable delivery helps tune a return without replacing the pump, while accessible hydraulic parts allow maintenance where deposits normally collect. These are practical capabilities rather than claims that one setting suits every aquarium.

The limits are equally important. Maximum values do not state the operating point automatically, electronics stay dry, the pump does not run without water and external control has its own boundaries. This profile removes superlatives, absolute silence, invented efficiency percentages, financial savings and universal tank sizing found in the dossiers. Final sound and delivered flow also depend on installation and impeller condition.
