JBL’s history begins in 1960 with the specialist shop opened by Joachim Böhme. The JBL brand appeared in 1968, operations moved to Neuhofen in 1984, and the current JBL GmbH & Co. KG form was adopted in 1997; these are distinct milestones in one business continuity.

The catalogue covers aquariums, terrariums and ponds through feeds, water treatments, tests, filters, pumps, lighting, heating and accessories. JBL combines manufacturing with research and field expeditions to natural habitats, which the company uses to develop technical material and product formulations.

The company remains based in Neuhofen, Rhineland-Palatinate. JBL’s name derives from the initials of founder Joachim Böhme and the original location of Ludwigshafen; its development from shop to international manufacturer explains why 1960 remains the business origin even though it predates the brand and current legal form. Aquarium, terrarium and pond divisions share research capabilities while retaining formulations and equipment designed for very different environments.
