
Potassium Deficiency (K)

Potassium (K) is a critical macronutrient, crucial for enzyme activation and osmoregulation in plants. Unlike Nitrogen and Phosphorus, which are supplied by fish waste, Potassium must be supplemented in nearly all planted aquariums. Because it is highly mobile, symptoms always manifest strictly on older leaves first.
Symptoms
Pinholes and Marginal Necrosis
The classic signs include small, circular pinholes appearing in older leaves. Unlike physical snail damage, these holes are rimmed with dark, dead (necrotic) tissue. As the deficiency progresses, the margins (edges) of the older leaves turn yellow (chlorosis) and eventually dry out and die off, leaving the stem completely bare at the bottom (legginess).
Main Causes
Lack of Dosing and High GH Antagonism
Tap water globally contains very little potassium (usually under 5 ppm). Additionally, in areas with extremely hard water (GH > 15), excess Calcium and Magnesium will chemically block the plant's roots and stomata from absorbing whatever trace amounts of Potassium are present (Cationic Antagonism). Lastly, new active substrates with high CEC will often absorb large amounts of Potassium from the water column, temporarily starving the plants.
Treatments & Solutions
Target Dosing and Pruning
You must dose a dedicated Potassium supplement (e.g., Seachem Flourish Potassium, Easy-Life Kalium) to achieve 15-20 ppm. Heavily damaged leaves with pinholes will never repair themselves. You must prune away all perforated or dying lower leaves to stop algae from taking over the rotting tissue and to redirect the plant's energy.
Prevention & biology
Maintain a strict, weekly macro-dosing schedule. Potassium is extremely safe; overdosing it (even to 30-40 ppm) will not harm fish and absolutely does not cause algae blooms. The golden rule by experts like Tom Barr is: 'When in doubt, add more Potassium'.
