
Carbon / CO2 Deficiency
Deficientia Dioxidi Carbonis
By dry weight, a plant is over 45% pure Carbon. It is the absolute 'master variable' in planted aquariums. Without dissolved CO2 gas, the most expensive fertilizers and lighting are utterly useless. When plants are driven hard by intense lighting but starved of CO2, they shut down and leak organics, which directly triggers the most dreaded algae of all: Black Beard Algae (BBA).
Symptoms
Total Stunting and BBA Blooms
Plant growth freezes entirely. Stems refuse to elongate, and old leaves become coated in tough, black, hairy tufts of Black Beard Algae (BBA) along their margins.
Biogenic Decalcification
Some hardy species (like Vallisneria and Elodea) will desperately strip carbon from the carbonates (KH) in the water. The toxic waste product of this process is pure calcium carbonate (chalk), which crusts over the leaves as hard, white, gritty deposits.
Main Causes
Too Much Light, No Gas
Running high-end, powerful LED lights without a pressurized CO2 gas system. The massive light drives the plant's metabolic demands through the roof, but the lack of carbon causes it to crash violently. Alternatively, poor CO2 distribution (no flow) where the bubbles just float to the surface instead of circulating around the plants.
Treatments & Solutions
1. Pressurized CO2 Injection
Install a proper CO2 cylinder and regulator. Adjust the bubble rate until your in-tank Drop Checker turns a bright lime green during the photoperiod, ensuring a stable ~30 ppm of dissolved CO2.
2. Liquid Carbon and Dimming
If gas is not an option, you MUST dim your lights significantly (e.g., to 30%). Less light equals less demand for carbon. You can also spot-dose liquid glutaraldehydes (Excel, EasyCarbo) to locally melt the Black Beard Algae, though this is a bandage, not a true carbon replacement.
Prevention & biology
Balance your 'Holy Trinity': Light, CO2, and Nutrients. Never upgrade your lighting unless you are prepared to upgrade your CO2 injection to match it. Keep water circulation high to distribute the gas perfectly.
