Antiparasitic
Metronidazole
Active Ingredient: Metronidazole
Metronidazole is a powerful antiprotozoal and anaerobic antibacterial medication. In aquaculture, it is highly valued because it is easily absorbed by fish through the gills and digestive tract. It is the gold standard for treating internal parasitic infections and flagellate-induced disorders.
Indications
- Internal Flagellates: Specifically targets Hexamita and Spironucleus, which cause 'Hole-in-the-Head' disease in Cichlids and Discus.
- Digestive Disorders: Treats 'Bloat' (Malawi Bloat) and internal bacterial infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.
- Alternative Ectoparasiticide: Can assist in managing stubborn cases of Ich and Velvet when applied in the water column.
Dosage & Application
- Water Column Treatment: Dose 125 to 250 mg per 40 liters (10 US gallons) of water. Repeat every 48 hours for up to 10 days. Perform a 25-50% water change before each dose.
- Medicated Food (Recommended for Internal Parasites): Mix 1 measure (approx. 100 mg) of Metronidazole with 1 tablespoon of frozen or high-quality dry food. Use a binding agent (such as Seachem Focus) to bind the medication to the food. Feed daily for 7 to 14 days.
Safety Notes
- Highly tolerated: Extremely safe for fish, plants, and biological filtration.
- Safe for most invertebrates when dosed according to directions, but using medicated food is strongly preferred to minimize direct exposure in invertebrate tanks.
- Remove active carbon and turn off UV sterilizers during treatment.
Leaflet Extract
Most effective when administered via medicated food. Highly tolerated by fish and invertebrates. Does not disrupt biological filtration. Light sensitive; turn off UV sterilizers.
