Malachite Green
Active Ingredient: Malachite Green oxalate (zinc-free)
Malachite Green is a powerful organic dye and triarylmethane compound used as an effective ectoparasiticide and fungicide in aquaculture. It works by interfering with the cellular respiration and metabolic processes of target pathogens. Due to its high potency, it is often combined in smaller doses with Formalin to form the synergistic 'Quick Cure' or 'FMC' formulations.
Indications
- External Protozoans: First-line treatment for Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis), Velvet (Oodinium), Costia, Chilodonella, and Trichodina.
- Fungal Infections: Treats Saprolegnia and other water molds affecting fish and fish eggs.
- Egg Treatment: Prevents fungus growth on eggs during incubation.
Dosage & Application
- Standard Dose: 0.05 to 0.1 mg/L in water. Redose every 24 to 48 hours for up to 3 to 5 treatments. Perform a 25-50% water change before each subsequent dose.
- Sensitive Fish (Scaleless): Treat at half-dose (0.025-0.05 mg/L) and monitor closely. This applies to Loaches, Plecos, Corydoras, and very young fry.
- Short Bath (High Concentration): 1-2 mg/L for 10-15 minutes.
Safety Notes
- Highly toxic to all invertebrates (shrimp, snails, clams, crabs, corals). Never use in a reef aquarium or invertebrate tank.
- Signs of distress: if fish gasp, perform an immediate water change.
- Malachite Green is light-sensitive; turn off aquarium lights during treatment to prevent rapid chemical degradation.
- It is a potential carcinogen and teratogen; handle with care, use protective gloves, and avoid inhalation of powder.
- Do not use on food fish.
