
Peritrich ciliate fouling
Peritrich ciliates form stalked colonies that filter bacteria and can attach to surfaces, carapaces and already compromised tissue. Light colonisation on shrimp may be superficial; dense fouling indicates high bacterial resources and can interfere with gills, movement or moulting. Epistylis, Vorticella and Zoothamnium resemble one another but are not synonyms.

What is observed
White, cream or translucent tufts appear on rostrum, appendages, gills or fin margins. Under magnification, bell-shaped cells sit on stalks and may contract; to the naked eye they resemble mould or fuzz. Irritation, increased gill ventilation, moulting difficulty and appetite loss indicate clinical involvement.

Ecological meaning
Colonies exploit suspended bacteria and stable surfaces; overfeeding, detritus, high density and low flow support growth. A debilitated host or damaged cuticle offers more attachment points. The ciliate may be an indicator or contributor, but presence alone does not establish the primary cause of disease.

Seek specialist assessment when colonies involve gills, eyes or wounds, breathing or moulting is impaired, or spread continues after environmental correction. Ulcers, haemorrhage or mortality suggest a second disease may be present. Macro images and a fresh preparation are more useful than empirical medication.

Similar phenomena
Saprolegnia and other oomycetes show branching filaments, mucus lacks stalked cells, and bacterial infections may form plaques without bells. Epistylis colonies do not contract as a whole, Vorticella individuals have contractile stalks and Zoothamnium colonies may contract together; microscopy is required. Visual similarity is not a diagnosis.

Gently collect a superficial scraping or small piece of moult and view it fresh in water. Document colony architecture, contraction, site and density while assessing skin, gills and water quality. In debilitated fish, secondary colonisation must be separated from primary disease.

Safe immediate actions
Immediately improve oxygenation, remove detritus and reduce uneaten food. Isolate a heavily colonised animal only in a stable compatible system and avoid improvised dips that may be more harmful than the fouling. Preserve a moult or sample for identification and monitor breathing.
Durable correction
First-line management corrects bacterial load, flow and hygiene without destabilising the biofilter. Targeted controls depend on host, ciliate, salinity and site; no product is universally safe for fish, shrimp, snails and plants. After crustacean moulting, check whether colonisation returns to distinguish temporary removal from environmental control.
Recovery signals
Quarantine new animals, keep stocking and feeding proportionate and siphon residues regularly. Examining gills, appendages and moults with magnification detects early colonies. Avoid sharing nets and siphons between systems with active fouling.
