Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific. Inhabits outer reef slopes, drop-offs, and steep walls at depths of 20 to 70 meters, taking refuge in shaded caves and coral crevices.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacanthidae. The genus Paracentropyge features a taller, more rounded body shape than Centropyge. Reaches a maximum length of 12 cm.

Social Behavior: Diurnal and highly elusive. Lives in small harems of one male and several females. Regularly swims upside down along cave ceilings.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features a zebra-like pattern with vertical black bands on a silvery-white body. Yellow accents tint the lower belly and pelvic fins. No obvious external sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 200 liters with abundant live rock arranged to form caves and narrow passages. A secure lid is necessary to prevent jumping.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Feeds on sponges, detritus, and algae. Must be fed 3–4 times daily with mysis, brine shrimp, and specialized sponge-based angelfish diets.

Water Quality: Needs stable parameters and low organic waste. Temperature 22–26°C, pH 8.1–8.4, salinity SG 1.020–1.025, GH 15–25, and KH 8–12. Efficient skimming is mandatory.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful with docile tankmates. May fight with other territorial dwarf angelfishes. Reef-safe with caution: may nip corals if underfed.

Aquarium Breeding: Extremely difficult in home aquariums. Broadcast spawners releasing pelagic eggs in pairs.

Risks and Diseases: High risk of starvation if it refuses food initially. Highly susceptible to Cryptocaryon and external parasites under stressful conditions.
