Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the tropical forests of Philippines (widespread). It inhabits the damp leaf litter of the forest floor, rock crevices, and areas near mountain streams or karst caves.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Ceratobatrachidae, genus Platymantis. Notable for its direct embryonic development, bypassing the aquatic tadpole stage completely.
Behavior and Habits: Primarily terrestrial or semi-arboreal, showing peak activity during the night. During the day, it remains hidden under fallen leaves, moss, or decaying logs.
Morphology: Compact body reaching about 4.5 cm. The skin features distinctive longitudinal wrinkles on the back for camouflage. Females are generally larger than males.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Set up a horizontal terrarium (minimum 50x30x30 cm) with a deep layer of coconut fiber, sterile peat, and moss. Provide ample dry leaf litter and decaying wood hides.
Lighting and Heating: Keep daytime temperatures stable at 26.0°C and night temperatures at 22.0°C. Provide a 12-hour natural light cycle with low-output UVB lighting.
Humidity and Hydration: Requires constant relative humidity between 80% and 95%. Mist daily with dechlorinated water and provide a very shallow water dish.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous diet consisting of small live insects (crickets, fruit flies, roaches). Supplement prey with calcium and vitamin D3 twice a week.
Compatibility: Suitable for species-specific tanks. Small groups of similar size can be housed together to prevent territorial aggression or cannibalism.
Health and Common Diseases: High risk of bacterial skin infections if the substrate is dirty or if there is insufficient air circulation. Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations.
