Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia, including Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. It inhabits tropical dry savanna, open deciduous monsoon forests, and arid coastal areas characterized by high year-round temperatures.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Classified under the family Varanidae, genus Varanus. It is the largest and heaviest living lizard species, reaching lengths of up to 3 meters (10 feet) and weights exceeding 70-130 kg. Genetic studies show a close relationship with prehistoric Australian varanids.
