Lined Leaf-tailed Gecko
Uroplatus lineatus
The 'stick' gecko of the bamboo forests. Extraordinarily different from all other Uroplatus, this gecko doesn't imitate dead leaves or bark, but has evolved into a very long, tapered shape devoid of dermal fringes to perfectly blend with the smooth stalks of Malagasy bamboo.

Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the primary rainforests of eastern and northeastern Madagascar. This highly specialized species lives and nests almost exclusively in areas densely populated by yellow bamboo.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Gekkonidae family. The Lined Leaf-tailed Gecko (*Uroplatus lineatus*) is uniquely adapted to mimic bamboo stalks, having evolved a long, cylindrical body devoid of the lateral skin fringes typical of the genus.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly nocturnal and arboreal. During the day, it sleeps stretched out flat along bamboo stems, aligning its body to blend in. At night, it hunts actively, jumping between stalks to capture prey.
Morphology: Adults reach 25-27 cm in total length. Body is elongated, with longitudinal stripes on a tan or yellow background and a spear-shaped tail. Males have prominent hemipenal bulges at the base of the tail.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: A tall, vertically oriented enclosure (minimum 45x45x60 cm) with excellent ventilation (mesh screen sides) is required. Furnish with smooth, thick yellow bamboo poles placed vertically and diagonally.
Lighting and Heating: Prefers moderate temperatures of 24-26°C during the day, with a nighttime drop to 20-22°C. Being nocturnal, they do not require intense heat lamps; a low-output UVB source (2%) is sufficient to maintain a natural photoperiod.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity levels between 70% and 90%, allowing the enclosure to dry out slightly during the day. Spray or run a misting system nightly to provide drinking water on the bamboo surfaces.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly insectivorous. Feed live crickets and small locusts. Prey items should be dusted with high-quality calcium and vitamin supplements every other day to prevent deficiencies.
Compatibility: Territorial geckos. House individually or in established male-female pairs. Never house two males together, and monitor pairs closely for signs of stress.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly sensitive to overheating and dehydration, which can lead to rapid decline. Lack of proper supplementation can cause metabolic issues. Handle with extreme care to avoid tail autotomy.

Reptilienprofil
- Diät
- Insectivore
- The Lined Leaf-tailed Gecko is a highly specialized ambush predator and strict insectivore. Depending heavily on its exceptional camouflage, it waits motionless on bark or branches for unsuspecting prey to wander within striking distance. In the wild, its diet consists of a wide variety of arboreal arthropods, including large spiders, roaches, and occasionally terrestrial snails. In a terrarium setting, their nutritional needs are effectively met by offering appropriately sized crickets, locusts, and dubia roaches, ensuring all feeder insects are gut-loaded and lightly dusted with essential calcium and vitamin supplements to maintain proper metabolic function.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 24 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Arboreal
- Arboreal. This species evolved specifically to inhabit bamboo forests, relying on vertical bamboo poles for resting and hunting.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Nocturnal
- Strictly nocturnal. Their elongated bodies are perfectly evolved to mimic bamboo stalks, where they rest motionless during the day.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- Characterized by a deeply cryptic and solitary lifestyle, the Lined Leaf-tailed Gecko relies almost entirely on its mimicry to evade detection by both predators and prey. While they are not as overtly aggressive as some other gecko species, males remain highly territorial and will engage in aggressive displays or physical combat if confined together. For long-term success in captivity, keepers are advised to house them either individually or in a sex-biased pair consisting of a single male and one female, ensuring the enclosure is expansive and richly structured to minimize stress.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Reproduction in this specialized species follows an oviparous strategy, typical of the leaf-tailed gecko genus. Females descend to the forest floor to lay clutches of exactly two spherical, calcified eggs, carefully concealing them within moist leaf litter or soft substrate to shield them from predators and environmental extremes. Captive incubation requires a delicate balance of cool temperatures—typically between 72°F and 76°F—and high ambient humidity, with embryonic development concluding after an extended incubation period of approximately 80 to 100 days.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Display only
- Strictly a display animal. They are extremely fragile, flighty, and any handling will cause profound stress.
- Brumation
- Nicht erforderlich
- No true brumation is needed. A minor temperature drop mimicking the Malagasy winter can be utilized to stimulate breeding.
- Häutung
- Periodic
- Shedding requires a high humidity environment (75-90%). A dry enclosure will quickly lead to stuck sheds and potential toe necrosis.
