Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Pacific islands, but widely introduced across coastal tropical regions. It inhabits rainforests, mangroves, and coastal vegetation, adapting easily to human structures where artificial lights attract prey.
Taxonomy and Genetics: A miniature gecko reaching 9-10 cm in total length. Coloration is highly variable, ranging from light cream to dark brown depending on temperature and stress, with a pattern of dark chevron (zig-zag) markings or spots along the back. Possesses adhesive toe pads for climbing smooth surfaces.
Behavior and Habits: Primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, though frequently active during the day. Highly social and vocal, they communicate via a series of clicking and chirping sounds to establish hierarchies. Females display pseudo-copulatory behaviors to stimulate ovulation.
Morphology: This species reproduces almost exclusively through parthenogenesis. The entire population is composed of clonal females that lay fertile, self-cloned eggs. Males are extremely rare, sterile, and considered genetic anomalies.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: Requires a vertically oriented terrarium (minimum 30x30x45 cm for a small group). Furnish with live broad-leaved plants (Pothos), branches, or hollow bamboo tubes, where females will glue their hard-shelled eggs in pairs.
Lighting and Heating: Maintain daytime temperatures around 22-26°C, with hot spots up to 28°C to encourage active breeding. While they tolerate room temperature, low-level (2-5%) UVB lighting is highly beneficial for calcium absorption and shell development.
Humidity and Hydration: Keep humidity levels between 60% and 80%. Mist the terrarium daily, preferably in the evening, to allow the geckos to drink water droplets from leaves and enclosure walls.
Feeding and Supplementation: Omnivorous. Feed on fruit flies (Drosophila), pinhead crickets, and commercial powdered crested gecko fruit diets. Keep a small dish of pure calcium powder available in the terrarium to support their continuous egg production.
Compatibility: Highly social and excellent for colony housing. The enclosure must be escape-proof as they can slip through gaps as small as 2 mm. Separate hatchlings immediately, as adults will cannibalize them.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly prone to metabolic bone disease (MBD) due to continuous egg-laying if calcium and vitamin D3 are deficient. Maintain clean conditions to prevent skin infections from fecal waste buildup.

Reptilienprofil
- Diät
- Omnivore
- Lepidodactylus lugubris requires a well-balanced diet to maintain optimal health and vitality in captivity. Its feeding regimen should closely mimic its natural dietary habits in the wild, including proper vitamin and mineral supplementation. Providing appropriate portion sizes and maintaining a regular feeding schedule are crucial for its digestive health.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 9 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Arboreal
- Lepidodactylus lugubris has adapted to a specific lifestyle that dictates the type of habitat it requires. It relies heavily on proper environmental enrichment, climbing structures, or burrowing substrates depending on its natural adaptations. Creating a terrarium that reflects these requirements allows the animal to thrive and minimizes captivity-related stress.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Nocturnal
- The activity pattern of Lepidodactylus lugubris is largely dictated by its natural rhythms and environmental cues. Knowing whether it is diurnal, nocturnal, or crepuscular is essential for providing appropriate lighting and heating schedules. Proper management of these cycles ensures the animal remains active, healthy, and exhibits natural foraging behaviors.
- Sozialität
- Gregarious
- Lepidodactylus lugubris exhibits a variety of fascinating behaviors that can be observed both in the wild and in an enclosure. These behaviors range from territorial displays and communication methods to foraging strategies. Understanding these actions helps keepers provide a more enriching environment and detect any signs of stress early on.
- Reproduktion
- Parthenogenetic
- The reproductive cycle of Lepidodactylus lugubris involves specific environmental triggers such as temperature and humidity changes. Successful breeding requires careful conditioning of both the male and female to ensure they are healthy. Once eggs or live young are produced, specialized care and incubation are often necessary for a high success rate.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Display only
- Handling Lepidodactylus lugubris should always be approached with care and respect for the animal's boundaries. Frequent or improper handling can lead to significant stress, defensive behaviors, or even injury to both the keeper and the pet. It is best to keep handling sessions brief and allow the animal to settle into its enclosure afterward.
- Brumation
- Nicht erforderlich
- Brumation in Lepidodactylus lugubris is a natural physiological process often triggered by seasonal drops in temperature and daylight. During this period, the animal will significantly reduce its activity, appetite, and metabolic rate. Keepers must carefully monitor temperatures and hydration to ensure a safe and healthy brumation cycle.
- Häutung
- Periodic
- The molting process is a critical time for Lepidodactylus lugubris as it sheds its old skin to accommodate growth and renewal. Proper humidity levels and access to a humid hide are essential to prevent retained sheds, especially around the toes and tail. Careful observation during this period helps prevent complications and ensures a smooth shedding cycle.
