Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Intellagama lesueurii is a reptile species native to the eastern coastal regions of Australia, spanning from northern Queensland down through New South Wales to eastern Victoria. Its natural habitat is closely associated with flowing freshwater systems, including rivers, creeks, lakes, and swampy areas bordered by dense riparian vegetation. They are frequently observed basking on tree branches that overhang the water, allowing them to plunge into the safety of the water at the first sign of danger.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Taxonomically, it belongs to the family Agamidae and is the sole member of the genus Intellagama. Previously placed in the genus Physignathus as Physignathus lesueurii, recent genetic and phylogenetic studies established its distinct evolutionary lineage. There are two recognized subspecies: the eastern water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii lesueurii) and the Gippsland water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii howittii), which differ primarily in coloration and throat patterns.
Behavior and Habits: These lizards are strictly diurnal and highly active semi-aquatic animals. They spend a significant portion of their day basking in the sun on rocks or branches to thermoregulate, and they are exceptional swimmers capable of staying submerged for over thirty minutes to evade land-based predators. Adult males are highly territorial, defending prime basking sites along water margins against rivals through head bobbing, arm waving, and throat swelling.
Morphology: The morphology of this lizard includes a muscular, robust body, a large triangular head, and a prominent crest of spiny scales running from the nape down the dorsal ridge to the tail. The long, powerful tail is laterally compressed to act as a rudder while swimming. Adult males can reach substantial sizes of 80 to 100 centimeters in total length, with the tail accounting for approximately two-thirds of the animal's total measurement.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: Due to their large size and high activity levels, these lizards require exceptionally large enclosures. The minimum dimensions for a single adult are 200 cm long, 100 cm wide, and 150 cm tall. The setup must feature a large, deep, filtered water area that covers at least one-third of the floor space, and several thick, secure branches positioned diagonally to facilitate climbing and natural perching behavior.
Lighting and Heating: High-intensity UVB lighting is mandatory for this species to ensure proper vitamin D3 synthesis and calcium metabolism. Metal halide lamps designed for reptiles are highly recommended. Air temperatures should range from 24°C in the cool zone to 30°C in the warm zone, with a localized basking spot of 35-38°C. Nighttime temperatures should be allowed to drop gradually to around 18-20°C.
Humidity and Hydration: Relative humidity in the enclosure must be maintained between 60% and 80% to replicate their natural riverbank environment. This can be achieved by misting the enclosure once or twice daily with warm water or installing an automated misting system. The presence of the large water container also helps maintain humidity and allows the lizard to soak and hydrate itself regularly.
Feeding and Supplementation: Juveniles require a diet of live insects, including crickets, roaches, mealworms, and earthworms. As they mature, they become omnivorous, and adults should be fed a diet consisting of approximately 40-50% plant matter, including dark leafy greens, dandelion greens, hibiscus flowers, and occasional small pieces of fruit. Dust food items with pure calcium powder three times a week and calcium with D3 once a week.
Compatibility: Adult males are highly territorial and must never be housed together in the same enclosure to prevent severe fighting, injuries, or death. A single male can be kept with one or two females in a very large outdoor or indoor enclosure, or they can be housed individually. Due to their predatory nature and active behavior, they should not be cohabitated with other reptile species.
Health and Common Diseases: Common health issues in captivity include Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) caused by lack of dietary calcium or insufficient UVB exposure, and respiratory infections resulting from low temperatures or poor ventilation. Bacterial or fungal dermatitis can also occur if the water in the soaking area is not kept clean, highlighting the need for a high-quality filtration system and regular water changes.

Reptilienprofil
- Diät
- Omnivore
- As an omnivore, this species requires a balanced diet of both animal protein and plant matter. Offer a mix of live gut-loaded insects alongside fresh leafy greens and vegetables. Regular supplementation with calcium and vitamins ensures optimal health and growth.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 90 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Semi-aquatic
- Leading a semi-aquatic lifestyle, this reptile requires an enclosure with both land and a substantial water feature. They are excellent swimmers and often retreat into the water when feeling threatened. The water must be kept clean and filtered, while the land area should offer a warm basking zone.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Diurnal
- This species is strictly diurnal, meaning it is highly active during the daylight hours. It requires intense full-spectrum UVB lighting and a proper basking spot to regulate its metabolism. During the night, it will retreat to a secure hide to sleep in complete darkness.
- Sozialität
- Gregarious
- This species tends to be skittish and fast-moving, often relying on flight to escape perceived threats. They generally prefer to be left alone and can become easily stressed by sudden movements. It is best to appreciate their active behaviors from a distance as a display animal.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- This species reproduces by laying eggs, which require specific conditions to hatch successfully. Females will seek out a suitable nesting site with moist substrate to deposit their clutch. Eggs must be carefully removed and incubated at the correct temperature and humidity levels.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Expert only
- This species is generally tolerant of handling once it has become accustomed to its keeper. Interactions should be kept brief and positive to avoid causing unnecessary stress. Always support their body fully and allow them to walk freely on your hands.
- Brumation
- Erforderlich
- In the wild, this species undergoes a period of brumation during the cooler winter months. In captivity, healthy adults can be safely cooled to simulate this natural resting phase. During this time, they will eat less and remain largely inactive until temperatures are raised.
- Häutung
- Periodic
- Like most lizards, this species sheds its skin in patches rather than in one continuous piece. Maintaining proper humidity levels and providing a humid hide are crucial to prevent stuck shed. Keepers should monitor the toes and tail tip closely to ensure all old skin is successfully removed.
