Red-bellied short-necked turtle
Emydura subglobosa
The brightly colored red-bellied short-necked turtle is a highly aquatic species. Requires a large aquaterrarium (minimum 120 cm length) with a very deep swimming area, intense mechanical filtration, and a totally dry basking platform.

Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This freshwater turtle is native to southern New Guinea and northern Australia. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, swamps, billabongs, and freshwater lagoons with rich vegetation and fallen trees, which they use as basking sites to regulate their body temperature.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Chelidae. As a pleurodiran or side-necked turtle, it tucks its head sideways under the margin of its shell rather than withdrawing it straight back. Genetic studies show minor regional coloration differences, but no distinct subspecies are widely recognized.
Behavior and Habits: Primarily aquatic and diurnal. They are highly active, excellent swimmers that spend considerable time basking on logs or rocks above the water. They have a curious and active temperament, generally coexisting peacefully with other turtles of similar size.
Morphology: The carapace is oval and streamlined, dark gray or brown in color. It is easily recognized by the bright reddish-pink coloration of the plastron and the lower margins of the shell, along with a prominent yellow stripe extending from the eye down the side of the neck. Adults reach 20-25 cm.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: Requires a large aquaterrarium with a minimum length of 120 cm for an adult. The water section must be deep enough for swimming (at least 30-40 cm). A completely dry basking platform is mandatory, which must be easily accessible via ramps and large enough for the turtle to dry its shell completely.
Lighting and Heating: The basking spot must have a heat lamp providing a temperature of 30-32 degrees Celsius, alongside a 5.0% UVB lamp active for 12 hours a day. The water temperature should be heated and kept between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius using a reliable, guarded aquarium heater.
Humidity and Hydration: Ambient humidity above the water should be maintained around 60-70%, which is naturally achieved through water evaporation. Hydration is sustained directly by swimming and drinking from their clean aquatic environment. High water quality is essential for skin health.
Feeding and Supplementation: Juveniles are highly carnivorous, while adults accept more plant matter. Offer earthworms, crickets, roaches, freshwater fish, shrimp, snails, and aquatic plants (like duckweed) or leafy greens. Dust the food with calcium and vitamin D3 supplements twice a week.
Compatibility: Can be kept with other peaceful aquatic turtles of similar size. Monitor closely during feeding times to prevent accidental biting injuries. Avoid housing with small fish or invertebrates in the tank, as they will quickly become prey for this active hunter.
Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to shell rot (SCUD) and fungal skin infections if water quality is poor. Upper respiratory infections can occur from drafty enclosures. Soft shell disease is common if calcium and UVB levels are inadequate. A high-quality external canister filter is essential.
