Rachow's killifish
Nothobranchius rachovii
An extraordinarily colorful African annual killifish. Famous for its short lifespan and resilient, drought-resistant eggs, it requires a dedicated setup with specialized substrate.

Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is native to southeastern Africa, with populations primarily concentrated in the floodplains of eastern Mozambique and southern Malawi. It inhabits temporary rainwater pools, swamps, and seasonal depressions in the floodplains of the Zambezi and Shire river systems. These ephemeral habitats dry up completely during the dry season.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Nothobranchiidae and the genus Nothobranchius. Described by Ahl in 1926, the species is a model organism in aging research due to its exceptionally short natural lifespan (about one year). It has developed a unique adaptation called embryonic diapause, allowing eggs to survive in dry mud for months.
Social Behavior: It is an active and highly energetic benthopelagic fish. Having a very short lifespan, it exhibits accelerated growth, reaching sexual maturity in just a few weeks. Males are persistent in courtship and display intraspecific aggression to defend spawning sites; therefore, it is best kept in harem setups with multiple females.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The species displays extreme sexual dimorphism. Males are spectacularly colored, featuring a bright turquoise body covered in red-edged scales, and fins with concentric bands of black, orange, and blue, reaching up to 6 cm. Females are smaller (4 cm) and display a plain, uniform grayish-beige coloration with no bright patterns.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Aquarium Setup: Requires a species-specific tank of at least 50-60 liters (approx. 15 gallons) for a trio consisting of one male and two females. The bottom should be free of sharp gravel; it is recommended to use a substrate of sterile peat moss or fine coconut fiber about 2-3 cm deep, or a dedicated spawning bowl filled with peat.
Diet and Feeding: Lighting should be moderate and not too bright, preferably with floating plants (like Ceratopteris or Pistia) to provide shade. The temperature must be kept stable between 20°C and 24°C (68-75°F); constantly higher temperatures will further accelerate their already short lifespan. Heating is managed with a standard heater.
Water Quality: Water should be soft to moderately hard, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.5-7.2) and a general hardness (GH) between 4 and 10 dGH. It is essential to keep the water clean using gentle biological filtration (such as a sponge air filter) to avoid strong currents that would exhaust the fish, along with small regular changes.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: An omnivore with carnivorous preferences. It accepts almost exclusively live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, daphnia, bloodworms, and mosquito larvae. It often rejects dry flake or pellet food. To keep males healthy and encourage egg production in females, offering fresh foods daily is essential.
Aquarium Breeding: Best kept in a dedicated species-only aquarium. If kept in a community tank, it should only coexist with small, peaceful species (like small tetras or Corydoras). Avoid keeping multiple males of the same species or aggressive, fast-swimming tankmates that could damage the male's beautiful and delicate fins.
Risks and Diseases: The annual life cycle means the fish will naturally age and die after 12-18 months. To breed them, the egg-laden peat must be harvested every two weeks, squeezed until damp, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored in the dark for a dry incubation period of 3-4 months before being re-flooded with cool water to trigger hatching.

Fischprofil
- Temperament
- Semi-aggressive
- Relatively peaceful, though males will constantly flare and display their magnificent fins at each other. They are highly active and focused almost entirely on feeding and mating. Providing plenty of plants ensures subdominant males can break line of sight.
- Diät
- Omnivore
- A dedicated carnivore that almost exclusively accepts live or frozen foods. A varied diet of live bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp is highly recommended. Achieving their world-famous coloration depends entirely on a high-quality, diverse diet.
- Lebenserwartung
- 1 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 6 cm
- Geschlechterverhältnis
- Specific M:F ratio
- Should be kept with a ratio of one male to two or three females. Males will vigorously pursue females for breeding from dawn till dusk. Having multiple females ensures no single female is overly stressed by a male's attention.
- Fütterungsfrequenz
- Twice daily
- Should be fed small amounts twice a day. Since their lifespan is only about a year, they must consume a lot of calories daily to grow and breed. Promptly remove any uneaten food to maintain pristine water conditions.
- Bioload
- Low
- Generates a minimal bioload, easily supported by small biological filters. Routine water maintenance is vital as they are sensitive to poor water conditions. Aim for excellent water quality to maximize their short natural lifespan.
- Fluss
- Stagnant
- Thrives in nearly stagnant water conditions, replicating the ephemeral pools of their native Mozambique. Air-driven sponge filters provide the necessary gentle filtration without creating strong currents. Strong flow will cause exhaustion and drastically shorten their life.
- Sprungrisiko
- Yes
- Notoriously prolific jumpers that can fit through incredibly small gaps. A completely secure, tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential. Make sure there are no escape routes around heater cords or filter tubes.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Famous annual killifish that bury their eggs in a soft substrate to survive the dry season. Peat moss is typically provided, which is then removed, dried, and stored for 4 to 6 months. Hydrating the dry peat moss will trigger the fry to hatch simultaneously.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- With caution
- Best maintained in a dedicated species tank to fully appreciate their spectacular colors and breeding behavior. They can be housed with gentle bottom-dwellers, but this can complicate egg collection. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or fast-swimming fish.
- Tankfüllstand
- Bottom
- Spends the majority of its time near the bottom of the aquarium looking for food and spawning sites. They will dive directly into the substrate to deposit their eggs. Floating plants can make them feel more secure to explore higher levels.
