Artbeschreibung

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-Pacific Ocean, from the Red Sea to Samoa. Inhabits shallow lagoons, expanses of debris and coastal seagrass beds, hiding among sponges or dead corals by day.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Dwarf Lionfish / Shortfin Turkeyfish (Neochirus brachyptera). "Dwarf" sized scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae). The wide pectoral fins are not divided into rays, but united by a membrane almost to the tip, like a fan.
Social Behavior: Crepuscular and nocturnal predator. Spends the day resting on the bottom upside down under ledges. Extremely static but proud; does not attack other fish for territory, but only out of hunger.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning cryptic red, brown or even yellow (very rare varieties) livery with faded bands. Adult males have a slightly more massive head but there is no obvious dimorphism.

Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner

Aquarium Setup: Marine tank of at least 150 liters (40 gallons). Rocky setup that offers large caves and shaded overhangs where it can rest by day. Intense light bothers it.
Diet and Feeding: Ambush carnivore, hunts invertebrates. In the aquarium it must be patiently weaned by moving thawed shrimp, krill or squid pieces on a stick. Ignores dry food; will devour live ornamental crustaceans.
Water Quality: Very robust species (specific gravity 1.022 - 1.025). Being a heavy carnivorous predator that pollutes a lot, it requires an excellent skimmer and generous water changes to stem nitrates.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Can cohabit in Reef aquariums (Reef Safe towards corals), but will exterminate any ornamental shrimp (Lysmata, Stenopus) or small fish (gobies, small damselfish) that fit in its mouth.
Aquarium Breeding: Never achieved at the amateur level. Nocturnal courtships end with the pelagic release of thousands of floating eggs in gelatinous masses.
Risks and Diseases: WARNING: Possesses highly VENOMOUS dorsal, anal and pelvic rays. The sting (very painful for humans) must be treated with hot water and medical care. It suffers greatly from rapid fluctuations in salinity.

Fischprofil

Temperament
Peaceful
The Dwarf Lionfish is generally characterized by a peaceful and somewhat reclusive demeanor toward larger tankmates. Its aggression is purely predatory, strictly directed at animals small enough to be considered prey rather than territorial disputes. They are slow and methodical hunters that use their enlarged pectoral fins to corner unsuspecting prey.
Diät
Omnivore
In the wild, their diet consists primarily of small benthic crustaceans and small fishes. In captivity, they must be transitioned from live feeder shrimp to a varied diet of frozen marine carnivore preparations, including krill, Mysis shrimp, and chopped fish or squid. It is important to avoid feeding them freshwater feeder fish like goldfish, which lack proper marine nutrients and can cause severe health issues.

Geschlechterverhältnis
Group
While they can be kept singly, they can also be successfully maintained in small groups or pairs if the aquarium is sufficiently large. A single male can be housed with one or more females, provided there are enough caves and hiding spots to establish territories. Keeping multiple males together should be avoided as it often leads to intense territorial disputes and physical damage.
Fütterungsfrequenz
Twice daily
Adult Dwarf Lionfish should be fed satisfying, appropriately sized meals about 3 to 4 times a week, rather than daily. Allowing a fasting period between meals mimics their natural feeding patterns and allows for proper digestion of large prey items. Overfeeding can lead to serious health complications, so their intake should be carefully monitored.
Bioload
Medium
The Dwarf Lionfish possesses a surprisingly high bioload for its relatively compact size, largely due to its predatory diet. They require substantial amounts of meaty foods, which consequently leads to significant waste production that can degrade water quality. An efficient biological filtration system, accompanied by strong mechanical filtration and frequent water changes, is necessary to keep nitrate levels in check.
Fluss
Strong
They thrive in aquariums with moderate, varied water flow that mimics the reef environments they naturally inhabit. While they appreciate some current to bring food their way, there must be calm areas among the rockwork where they can perch and rest without fighting the flow. Overly turbulent water can be exhausting for them and may cause them to hide continuously.
Sprungrisiko
No
Reproduktion
Oviparous
Captive breeding has been occasionally observed but remains a significant challenge for the average aquarist. They are known to engage in complex courtship displays before releasing large, buoyant egg masses into the water column. The primary hurdle in successful propagation is providing the microscopic planktonic food necessary for the delicate larvae to survive their early stages.
Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
Territorial
They are an excellent choice for a moderately-sized predator reef or fish-only system, mixing well with similarly sized or larger tangs, large angelfish, and robust wrasses. Any fish or motile invertebrate small enough to fit in its mouth will eventually become a meal, including small gobies and ornamental shrimp. Caution should be exercised to avoid housing them with aggressive species that may nip at their elaborate fins.
Tankfüllstand
Middle/Bottom
This species predominantly occupies the lower and middle regions of the aquarium, often perching motionless on rocks or the substrate. They are somewhat cryptic during the day, frequently retreating to shaded overhangs or caves within the live rock. They become noticeably more active during the evening or when anticipating a feeding, venturing out to inspect their surroundings.
