Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis is native to the western Central Pacific, specifically surrounding the Marshall Islands and Kwajalein. It inhabits deep outer reef slopes, typically at depths of 30 to 50 meters, in areas with clear water.
Taxonomy and Morphology: A member of the Labridae family, described by Randall in 1988. It is unique due to the distinct rhomboid (diamond-shaped) caudal fin of adult males and the elongated, streamlined body typical of the genus Cirrhilabrus.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, active, and social. They naturally live in small harems consisting of one dominant male and multiple females. Males perform spectacular courtship displays, intensifying their coloration (flashing) to attract females.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males exhibit a gorgeous golden-yellow to orange body covered in a maze of electric blue lines. The tail fin is diamond-shaped. Females are smaller, with simpler pinkish-orange colors and a rounded tail.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Aquarium Setup: An aquarium of at least 300 liters is required. Provide ample live rock structures for shelter and sleep. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is absolutely mandatory, as this wrasse is a notorious jumper when startled.
Diet and Feeding: Planktonic carnivore. Requires feeding multiple times a day with high-quality frozen foods, such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, calanus, and chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality pellets once acclimated.
Water Quality: Prefers slightly cooler waters due to its deep-sea origin; maintain temperature between 22°C and 25°C. Specific gravity should be kept stable at 1.023-1.025, with pH 8.1-8.4 and high dissolved oxygen levels.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Excellent reef-safe species. It will not harm corals or small ornamental shrimp. Housed safely with other peaceful reef fish. Do not house with aggressive wrasses or boisterous tankmates that cause stress.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity has not been achieved in home aquaria. They are pelagic spawners, releasing eggs and sperm into open water currents during sunset courtship rituals, which are hard to replicate.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is jumping through unprotected lids. They can suffer from internal parasites post-import and are vulnerable to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) if subjected to rapid temperature changes or stress.

Fischprofil
- Temperament
- Peaceful
- The overall temperament of Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis can be described as active and peaceful. Understanding their personality is vital for maintaining a peaceful and stress-free environment. They may exhibit unique behaviors when interacting with their surroundings or during feeding time. Careful consideration of their disposition leads to a more rewarding fishkeeping experience.
- Diät
- Carnivore
- The natural diet of Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis is primarily carnivorous. In captivity, they should be offered a varied selection of high-quality foods to meet their nutritional needs. Incorporating both dry commercial diets and frozen or live options will ensure optimal health and coloration. A varied diet prevents nutritional deficiencies.
- Lebenserwartung
- 5-8 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 8 cm
- Geschlechterverhältnis
- Harem
- The ideal sex ratio for keeping Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis is typically harem. Keeping them in these numbers helps reduce intraspecific aggression and mimics their natural social structure. Providing ample hiding spots can further alleviate tension among dominant individuals. Always monitor the group dynamics when introducing new specimens.
- Fütterungsfrequenz
- Twice daily
- Feeding Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis should generally be done multiple times daily. It is important to provide only what they can consume in a few minutes to prevent leftover food from decaying. Establishing a regular feeding schedule helps keep the fish active and healthy. Adjust the frequency if you observe signs of undernourishment or overfeeding.
- Bioload
- Low to Medium
- The bioload produced by Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis is generally considered medium. This means that the filtration system must be adequately sized to handle their waste output. Regular water changes and tank maintenance are strongly recommended to keep the environment healthy. Failure to do so can result in poor water quality and stress the fish.
- Fluss
- Strong
- In their natural habitat, Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis experiences water flow that is moderate. Replicating this in the aquarium is crucial for their well-being and natural behavior. Appropriate water movement aids in oxygenation and prevents dead spots in the tank. Utilizing adjustable powerheads can help achieve the perfect balance.
- Sprungrisiko
- Yes
- The risk of Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis jumping out of the aquarium is rated as very high. Therefore, a tight-fitting lid or a secure mesh cover is highly recommended. Many fish jump when startled by sudden movements or poor water conditions. Securing the top ensures that your fish remain safely inside the tank.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Regarding reproduction, Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis is known to be a pelagic spawner. Breeding them in a home aquarium requires specific water parameters and a dedicated setup. Providing the correct spawning media and conditioning the adults with high-quality foods will increase success. Raising the fry can be challenging and requires specialized microscopic foods initially.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- Reef safe
- When it comes to compatibility, Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis is characterized as peaceful. They should be housed with tank mates that share similar water requirements and temperament. Care must be taken not to include species that could easily become prey or outcompete them for food. Observation is key to ensuring a harmonious community.
- Tankfüllstand
- Top/Middle
- In the aquarium, Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis prefers to occupy the mid-top level. Designing the aquascape to cater to this preference ensures the fish feel secure and display their best colors. Ensure that there is adequate swimming space and appropriate decor in their preferred zone. This vertical distribution also allows for careful selection of tank mates that occupy other levels.
