Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific, ranging from southern India and Sri Lanka to southern Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and northern Australia. It primarily inhabits shallow coral reefs, tidal flats, coastal lagoons, and seagrass beds, moving slowly over sandy or muddy substrates in search of food.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Hemiscylliidae, this species is characterized by an elongated, cylindrical body and a broad, flattened head with nostrils located near the tip of the snout. It features two similarly sized spineless dorsal fins. Adults can reach a maximum length of 100 to 120 centimeters, though captive specimens may stay slightly smaller.
Social Behavior: It is a nocturnal and solitary bottom-dweller that spends most daylight hours resting inside caves, crevices, or underneath rocky overhangs. Unlike open-water sharks, it is sluggish and uses its muscular pectoral and pelvic fins to crawl along the substrate. It is generally peaceful towards larger fish but remains a dedicated predator of small benthic organisms.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Juveniles possess a striking pattern of bold dark brown and black vertical bands contrasting against a light cream or white background. As they mature, this pattern fades into a uniform greyish-brown coloration with faint spots. Adult males are distinguished by the presence of prominent claspers located at the inner margins of their pelvic fins.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Aquarium Setup: Requires an exceptionally large aquarium, with a minimum volume of 1000 to 1500 liters (approx. 260-400 gallons) to accommodate an adult. The substrate must consist of deep, smooth aragonite sand to prevent belly lesions. Aquascaping should feature secured live rock structures along the perimeter to create cave-like shelters, leaving the central sand bed open for swimming and resting.
Diet and Feeding: Strictly carnivorous. The diet must consist of high-quality marine seafood including squid, shrimp, scallops, clams, and small whole fish. Juveniles should be fed 3 to 4 times a week using long feeding tongs, while adults require feeding only 2 to 3 times weekly. Incorporate shark-specific vitamin supplements regularly to prevent iodine deficiency and subsequent goiter development.
Water Quality: Demands pristine and highly stable water parameters: temperature 23-26°C (73-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.021-1.025, and KH 8-12. Given their high waste output, a heavy-duty protein skimmer, robust biological filtration, and frequent partial water changes are mandatory. Nitrate levels must be carefully managed and kept below 20 ppm.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Can be housed with large, active, non-aggressive species such as tangs, large angelfish, groupers, and mild-mannered triggerfish. Small fish, crabs, and ornamental shrimp will quickly become nocturnal prey. Avoid species that are notorious for picking at slow-moving tankmates, such as pufferfish, puffers, or highly aggressive triggerfish species.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Often sold as egg cases (referred to as "mermaid's purses"). The egg requires stable conditions and takes about 2 to 4 months to hatch depending on temperature. Newly hatched pups are 15-18 cm long and may require live food, such as ghost shrimp, to stimulate their initial feeding response in a dedicated rearing tank.
Risks and Diseases: Elasmobranchs are extremely sensitive to copper-based medications and other common fish treatments; alternative parasite control methods must be used. Goiter caused by iodine deficiency is a significant health concern. Rough substrates or sharp rocks can cause abdominal scrapes, which easily lead to secondary bacterial infections.

Perfil de peixe
- Temperamento
- Territorial
- They are relatively docile and sedentary, especially during daylight hours. They become much more active and hunt for food during the night. Despite their docile nature, they possess powerful jaws and will opportunistic consume anything small enough to fit in their mouths.
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- Brownbanded Bamboo Sharks are strict carnivores that require a meaty diet to thrive. They should be fed pieces of fresh squid, shrimp, scallops, and marine fish flesh. Dietary variety is crucial, and food should be occasionally soaked in vitamin supplements to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
- Expectativa de vida
- 20-25 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 132 cm
- Proporção sexual
- Flexible
- If keeping multiple specimens, a ratio of one male to one or more females is ideal. This reduces mating aggression directed at a single female during the breeding season. However, keeping multiple sharks requires a monumentally large aquarium footprint.
- Frequência de alimentação
- 3-4 times daily
- Juveniles should be fed small meaty meals three to four times a week. Adult sharks typically only need to be fed two to three times a week. Overfeeding must be avoided as it can lead to obesity and severe water quality degradation.
- Carga biológica
- Extreme
- This shark produces a massive bioload due to its large adult size and carnivorous diet. Extremely heavy mechanical filtration and oversized protein skimmers are absolutely necessary. Frequent large water changes must be performed to manage accumulating nitrates and maintain excellent water quality.
- Fluxo
- Moderate
- They appreciate moderate to strong water flow across the bottom of the aquarium. This flow helps keep waste suspended for filtration and oxygenates the water efficiently. However, calm resting spots under caves or overhangs must also be provided.
- Risco de salto
- No
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- This species is oviparous, laying large egg cases commonly referred to as mermaid's purses. Breeding in captivity is possible in massive systems with mature pairs. The eggs can take several months to hatch depending on the ambient water temperature.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- Community
- They are generally peaceful towards similarly sized or larger tank mates that cannot be swallowed. Smaller fish and mobile invertebrates like crabs or shrimp will likely be viewed as food. Suitable companions include large tangs, groupers, and sturdy moray eels.
- Nível do tanque
- Bottom
- They are exclusively bottom-dwelling fish that spend the majority of their time resting on the substrate. A very large open sand bed is essential to prevent injury to their soft bellies. They will also utilize large caves and ledges for daytime hiding.
