Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is native to the southeastern United States, primarily found in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. It inhabits shallow, slow-moving freshwater habitats such as cypress swamps, ephemeral ponds, drainage ditches, and peat bogs with dense aquatic vegetation, where it burrows into decaying plant matter and bottom mud.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Sirenidae and the genus Pseudobranchus. It is distinguished from the larger sirens of the genus Siren by having only three toes on its forelimbs instead of four. It is a permanently neotenic species, meaning it retains larval features such as external gills throughout its entire adult life. No genetic morphs exist.
Behavior and Habits: Fully aquatic and primarily nocturnal. During the day, it stays concealed within thick vegetation mats or buried in substrate debris. It possesses a remarkable adaptation for surviving seasonal droughts: it can aestivate in dry mud by secreting a protective mucus cocoon that prevents desiccation until the rains return.
Morphology: Features an elongated, eel-like cylindrical body reaching lengths of 10 to 22 cm. It possesses only two tiny, reduced forelimbs with three toes each; hind limbs are completely absent. It has bushy external gills on the sides of its head, small eyes, and a pattern of distinct yellow or tan longitudinal stripes running down its dark grey body.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Terrarium Setup: Since this is a fully aquatic amphibian, the setup should be a specialized aquarium of at least 60 to 80 liters (approx. 15-20 gallons) for a pair. The substrate must consist of very fine, smooth sand or silt to allow burrowing without scraping their skin; never use sharp gravel. Heavily plant the tank with aquatic species like Hornwort, Java Moss, and Elodea to simulate their natural swampy habitat.
Lighting and Heating: Prefers dim lighting conditions, which can be achieved by using floating plants (like Duckweed or Salvinia) and low-output LED lights. Water temperatures must be kept cool, ideally between 18°C and 24°C (64-75°F). A heater is rarely necessary unless room temperatures drop below 12°C (53°F), but protect them from high heat exceeding 27°C (80°F).
Humidity and Hydration: Being fully aquatic, hydration is not an issue. However, keep the water depth moderate, around 20 to 30 cm (8-12 inches), to allow them to easily swim to the surface to gulp atmospheric air using their lungs when needed. Ensure the water is well-filtered but with a gentle outflow, as they dislike strong currents.
Feeding and Supplementation: Carnivorous. In captivity, they feed on small live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworms, tubifex worms, daphnia, small earthworms, and brine shrimp. They hunt primarily by smell and touch along the bottom, so target-feeding with tongs near their snout is highly effective. Ensure a varied diet to support their health.
Compatibility: Can be housed safely with their own species in groups if space is sufficient. Do not mix with large predatory fish, aggressive crabs, or fish that might nip at their delicate external gills. Suitable tankmates are peaceful freshwater snails and small, slow-moving, non-aggressive fish that prefer cool water temperatures.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly susceptible to bacterial and fungal skin infections, especially if the water quality deteriorates or if they suffer skin abrasions from rough substrate or sharp decorations. Maintain excellent water quality with regular partial water changes using dechlorinated water. Avoid ammonia spikes, which are lethal.
