ReefRun 9000

ReefRun 9000 is the largest model in Red Sea’s documented first-generation ReefRun range, alongside ReefRun 5500 and ReefRun 7000. The pump and the ReefRun Dual Controller are related but distinct products: the pump moves water, while the controller supplies its operating interface and ReefBeat functions. This profile covers the pump catalog identity `reefrun-9000`; it does not merge the separate controller, the duplicate legacy catalog slug `red-sea-reefrun-9000`, the later ReefRun G2 family or REEFER DC skimmer pumps. Red Sea’s exact G1 manual is the technical authority. The ambiguous dossier was used only to locate material, not as evidence for dimensions, noise, weight, voltage or bundled contents.

The model is intended for return-water service where its documented pump curve fits the real hydraulic system. Red Sea states a controllable flow range of 4000–9000 l/h, equivalent to 1000–2500 US gph, a head range of 2.6–7.0 m or 8.5–23.0 ft, and power consumption from 30–95 W. Those endpoints describe the pump’s published operating envelope, not the flow that will automatically reach an aquarium. Pipe length, bends, valves, fittings and vertical rise impose losses. Select the pump from a calculated operating point and the published curve, then verify the return rate in the installed system instead of treating the model number as a guaranteed delivered flow.

ReefRun 9000 can only be used through a ReefRun Dual Controller, according to the G1 pump manual. One controller accepts up to 2 compatible ReefRun DC return pumps, DC skimmer pumps or one of each, but the devices keep their own physical roles. The controller can pause or resume a configured pump and change intensity; ReefBeat adds schedules and uniform-wave settings. App intensity is adjustable in 1% increments, the dial displays 10% bands and each dial click represents 2%. The default return-pump behavior is continuous 24/7 operation at the selected intensity. A customized daily schedule can use up to 10 time slots. These are controller capabilities, not electronics built into the pump body.

The pump includes protective behavior for running dry or a blocked impeller: the Dual Controller shuts it down and allows restart after the cause is resolved. Repeated unsuccessful restarts may require disconnecting the controller cable for about 30 seconds before trying again. This protection is a response to a fault, not permission to operate with inadequate water or obstruction. For two return pumps, the App can link them so schedules and on/off actions are shared, while each retains an intensity setting; different ReefRun DC pump models may be linked, but a DC return pump cannot be linked as a pair with a DC skimmer pump. Closed-loop uniform-wave use is documented separately and should not be assumed for ordinary return plumbing.

The supplied submerged-installation context uses the pump flow guide and the documented outlet fittings. ReefRun 7000/9000 share the listed hose barb for 25/32 mm flexible tube, while the component drawing also shows a connector for 32 mm and 1-inch rigid pipe. Flexible tube must be secured to the hose barb with suitable clips, which Red Sea says are not supplied. The outlet chamber can be oriented toward the return connection and the cable connector should remain accessible for maintenance. External, non-submerged operation is possible only with the additional outlet fitting set R35564 replacing the flow guide. Do not infer that a dry installation uses the same component arrangement as a fully submerged sump installation.

Before operation, dismantle and reassemble the pump as the manual recommends so that the outlet chamber, impeller assembly, O-rings, bearing and retaining parts are understood. Fit the 4 rubber feet, place the pump securely in the sump and orient the flow-guide inlets toward the bottom. Assemble the appropriate pipe or hose connection without imposing strain on the outlet. Connect the pump, its power supply and controller cable exactly as shown in the separate diagrams, keeping unused controller ports covered. Read the controller instructions before switching on. After plumbing is filled, check joints, cable routing and sump water level, then start at a controlled setting and observe the complete return path.

Red Sea recommends regular cleaning to remove organic and calcium-carbonate deposits without prescribing a universal calendar interval. Stop the pump from the controller or App, disconnect it from the controller cable and keep the connector out of the sump. Remove the outlet chamber and impeller assembly carefully, retaining both O-rings. Rinse the body and impeller with water and use a soft brush. If needed, soak the pump and impeller in a slightly acidic solution such as diluted vinegar, after removing rubber parts including O-rings and feet. During reassembly, replace the impeller O-ring, orient the `UP` marking correctly and control the strong rotor magnet to avoid damaging the ceramic bearing.
