Tropica Aquarium Plants was founded in 1970 by Holger Windeløv, who turned an interest in aquatic plants collected during travel into a specialist Danish nursery. The site in Egå near Aarhus became the centre for propagating and preparing plants for export. Windeløv sold the company to JPS Clemens in 2004, marking a change of ownership without interrupting the identity of the Tropica brand.

The catalogue includes potted plants, portions, mosses, and 1-2-Grow! in-vitro cultures, together with fertilizers, substrates, CO2 systems, and small tools for planted tanks. Sterile culture makes it possible to distribute young plants without visible algae or pests, while greenhouse production depends on selection, propagation, and plant-health control. Tropica supports the range with guidance on difficulty, light, growth, and placement.

The company expanded its nursery with new facilities in 2007 and sells through retailers and distributors in many markets. Its role is not only to supply plants but also to standardize names, formats, and cultivation information for aquascaping. The history joins the founder’s botanical exploration with industrial propagation methods; the 2004 transaction concerns corporate ownership, while 1970 remains the producer’s origin date.
