Tetra was founded in 1951 by biologist Ulrich Baensch in Melle, Germany. Its historical breakthrough was TetraMin, one of the early complete flake foods that made routine feeding of tropical fish more practical. The name derives from the original idea of a four-stage process. From that nutritional innovation, the business developed into an international aquarium and pond brand.

Tetra now supplies flakes, granules, and specialist foods, together with conditioners, tests, treatments, plant fertilizers, filters, aeration, and equipment for tanks and ponds. Nutrition remains the historical core, but the range also supports setup, maintenance, and water control. Biological research, formulation, and large-scale production have allowed products to be adapted to different species and conditions, from domestic aquariums to ornamental ponds.

Ownership has changed several times: Baensch sold the company to Warner-Lambert in 1974, and after further transitions Rayovac, later Spectrum Brands, completed its acquisition of Tetra in 2005. Tetra GmbH retains its operating identity and base in Melle but is therefore part of a diversified American group. The 1951 foundation describes the original Tetra business and brand, not the age of its present parent company.
