Bryozoans form branching or gelatinous colonies, peritrich ciliates are far smaller and look like fuzz, and filamentous algae do not contract when touched. Hydra polyps show radial symmetry and distinct tentacles. A lens at the glass and contraction response are stronger clues than colour.

Observe under side lighting and low magnification, documenting both extended and contracted polyp. Count a defined glass area before and after feeding to track the trend. If the target lacks tentacles or contraction, collect a sample before choosing any control.

Safe immediate actions

Reduce dispersed live food for several days and siphon accessible polyps with narrow tubing, treating heavily colonised leaves outside the tank. Protect fry and tiny crustaceans by moving them only to a stable mature container. Avoid scraping without siphoning because detached polyps and fragments can redistribute.

Durable correction

The safest management starts with repeated physical removal and prey reduction. Chemical or biological controls are not universal and may be incompatible with snails, shrimp, plants or host species, so require specific checks. Measure density over time to distinguish real reduction from temporary polyp contraction.

Recovery signals

Quarantine or inspect plants, moss and live cultures and avoid transferring water between rearing systems. Dose nauplii and fine feeds for rapid consumption. Torch checks after lights-out help find small colonies before widespread budding.
