Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to Hong Kong and parts of coastal Guangdong province in southern China. It inhabits clean, slow-flowing mountain streams, rocky pools, and hill reservoirs with cool, highly oxygenated water, seeking shelter under submerged rocks, logs, and leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Genetics: A stocky and robust newt reaching 13-16 cm in total length. The skin is remarkably thick, rough, and covered in dense, sensory warts (granules). The dorsal coloration is dark brown, charcoal, or olive, featuring prominent vertebral and lateral ridges. In contrast, the belly (ventral side) displays a bright orange or fiery red pattern of irregular spots, serving as an aposematic warning.
Behavior and Habits: Primarily nocturnal and highly aquatic, though terrestrial phases occur, especially in subadults. They are slow but deliberate walkers on the stream bed, utilizing their muscular, compressed tail to swim. They are territorial and can exhibit aggressive behavior toward conspecifics when resources or space are limited.
Morphology: Sexual dimorphism is visible during the breeding season. Males are generally smaller and more slender, and they develop a swollen, bulbous cloaca, often showing a bluish sheen on the tail. Females are larger, heavier, and exhibit a rounder, stockier body when gravid.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: A spacious, escape-proof semi-aquatic setup (aquaterrarium or paludarium) is required, with a minimum size of 80x40x40 cm for a small group. The aquatic area should occupy 70-80% of the tank, with a water depth of 20-25 cm, decorated with large, smooth river stones (to prevent ingestion), driftwood, and cold-hardy aquatic plants. A secure lid is essential, as newts are excellent climbers.
Lighting and Heating: Cool temperatures are critical for this species; they thrive at 15-22°C (59-72°F). Temperatures above 24-25°C (75-77°F) are highly stressful and can be rapidly fatal. A water chiller or keeping the tank in a cool room is highly recommended during summer. A physiological night temperature drop is beneficial. Moderate lighting is sufficient; UVB (2-5%) is recommended.
Humidity and Hydration: High humidity (70-80%) in the land area is necessary. The aquatic area must have pristine water quality with a mature biological filter and low to moderate current. Weekly water changes of 20-30% are recommended. Avoid any trace of chlorine, chloramine, or heavy metals, which damage their sensitive skin.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly carnivorous. They feed on frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, blackworms, chopped earthworms, brine shrimp, and small freshwater shrimp. They are opportunistic bottom feeders with a strong suction response. Dust terrestrial insects with calcium and multivitamin supplements (e.g. Repashy or Dendrocare) once or twice a week.
Compatibility: Best housed in a species-specific tank. They can be aggressive and territorial, occasionally biting the limbs or tails of tankmates. Keep only individuals of similar size, ideally a small harem (one male and two females). Do not house with fish, which will be nipped or may nip the newt's external gill vestiges.
Health and Common Diseases: The most critical threat is heat stress, which leads to immune suppression, skin infections, and rapid death. Poor water quality can cause ammonia poisoning, bacterial septicaemia, bloat (dropsy), and fungal infections (saprolegniasis). Handle as little as possible, as human skin oils and warmth can damage their protective slime coat.

Amphibienprofil
- Diät
- Carnivore
- Paramesotriton hongkongensis is a carnivorous amphibian that primarily feeds on small invertebrates. In its natural habitat, its diet consists of earthworms, insects, spiders, and small crustaceans. For optimal health in captivity, a varied diet supplemented with calcium and vitamins is highly recommended. Overfeeding should be avoided to prevent obesity, which is common in captive amphibians. A consistent feeding schedule helps maintain their metabolic balance.
- Lebenserwartung
- 10-15 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 15 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Aquatic
- The lifestyle of Paramesotriton hongkongensis is closely tied to moisture, oscillating between aquatic and terrestrial phases depending on the season. They require habitats with high humidity and access to clean water to keep their permeable skin hydrated. They spend much of their time foraging in leaf litter or resting in shallow pools. A bio-active enclosure that mimics the forest floor or a marshy bank is ideal for this species. Environmental stability is key to their long-term thriving.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Crepuscular
- As a predominantly nocturnal species, Paramesotriton hongkongensis is most active during the night and twilight hours. During the day, they remain sheltered in cool, damp microhabitats to prevent moisture loss. Their activity levels spike significantly during rainy or highly humid conditions. In a terrarium, they will often emerge to forage once the lights are turned off. Simulating natural light cycles is crucial for maintaining their circadian rhythms.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- Paramesotriton hongkongensis is known for its secretive and generally docile behavior, preferring to stay hidden under debris. They are mostly solitary, only seeking out others during the breeding season. When threatened, they may adopt a defensive posture or secrete mildly toxic substances from their skin glands. Providing ample hiding spots in their enclosure is essential to reduce stress and promote natural behaviors. They rarely show aggression unless competing for limited resources.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- The reproductive cycle of Paramesotriton hongkongensis typically coincides with seasonal changes, especially increased rainfall. Males will often display complex courtship behaviors to attract females before depositing a spermatophore. Once fertilization occurs, the female lays her eggs in slow-moving water or attached to aquatic vegetation. The eggs hatch into aquatic larvae equipped with external gills, which they retain until metamorphosis. Breeding in captivity requires careful manipulation of temperature and humidity.
- Toxizität
- Harmless
- Their skin glands produce toxins designed to make them unpalatable and potentially lethal to predators. Tetrodotoxin is present in their skin, meaning they should never be ingested and should be kept away from other household pets. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after performing tank maintenance.
- Lebensphase
- Adult only
- They hatch as gilled aquatic larvae that actively hunt microscopic prey in the water. As they mature, they undergo a transformation where they lose their gills and begin relying on lung respiration. Adult specimens exhibit a bumpy skin texture and bold belly patterns, living for many years under optimal conditions.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Display only
- Display only. Their warty skin contains potent toxins to deter predators. Handling them can be harmful to both the newt's slime coat and the handler.
- Brumation
- Because their native habitat is subtropical, they do not undergo extreme brumation, but they do experience a noticeable drop in activity during the cooler winter months.
- Häutung
- Regular
- Shedding is performed entirely in the water. The newt removes its skin in one piece if healthy, pulling it off with its mouth and consuming it.
