Geographical Origin and Habitat: Neurergus strauchii is a tailed amphibian endemic to eastern Turkey. Its geographical range is restricted to the mountainous provinces surrounding the Lake Van basin, including Bitlis, Muş, Bingöl, and Malatya. This species inhabits a very specific terrestrial and freshwater environment, typically at elevations between 1000 and 2000 meters above sea level. It frequents small mountain streams, cold springs, slow-flowing creeks, and temporary pools surrounded by sparse riparian vegetation. During the autumn and winter months, it migrates to land, taking shelter under rocks, fallen logs, or in loose damp soil, whereas in spring and summer, it returns to the water to breed.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Taxonomically, it belongs to the family Salamandridae, subfamily Pleurodelinae, and the genus Neurergus. The species is divided into two geographically distinct subspecies: the nominate subspecies Neurergus strauchii strauchii, distributed east of the Euphrates River, and Neurergus strauchii barani, located west of the Euphrates. Genetically, this species represents an important evolutionary link for studying Middle Eastern newts, displaying a unique adaptation to arid mountain climates with freezing winters and estivation states during the hottest, driest summer months.
Behavior and Habits: This is a semi-aquatic species with well-defined seasonal patterns. During the terrestrial phase, it is predominantly nocturnal to avoid dehydration, emerging from damp shelters only after sunset or following rainfall to hunt for small invertebrates. During the aquatic breeding phase, it becomes highly active during the day as well. It is a capable swimmer and spends significant time on the stream bed. In winter, it enters a state of underground hibernation that lasts several months, while in summer, if streams dry up, it can enter estivation.
Morphology: The morphology of this species is highly striking. It features a shiny black or dark brown ground color, covered with a series of bright yellow or orange circular spots that serve as an aposematic warning to predators. The belly is a vivid red or orange, lacking dark spots in the nominate subspecies. The tail is laterally compressed and highly developed. Adults reach a total length between 14 and 18 centimeters. Males exhibit a characteristic bluish-white stripe on the sides of the tail during the breeding season and a more swollen cloaca.

Terrarium Setup: Successfully keeping this species requires a tank or paludarium with minimum dimensions of 80x40x40 cm for a pair or small group. The setup should provide a water zone approximately 15-20 cm deep and an easily accessible land zone, created with stable flat rocks, cork bark, and damp moss. The ideal substrate for the aquatic part consists of fine, rounded gravel or silica sand, enriched with non-calcareous stones that create underwater hiding spots. In the terrestrial part, coconut fiber covered with dry leaf litter and sphagnum moss can be used.
Lighting and Heating: Lighting should be moderate, ideal for growing simple aquatic plants like pothos or mosses. Temperature parameters are critical: this species requires cold conditions. During spring and summer, the water temperature must be kept between 15°C and 20°C (59°F to 68°F). Temperatures consistently above 22-23°C (71-73°F) are extremely dangerous and can be lethal. During winter, it is essential to provide a hibernation period at temperatures between 4°C and 8°C (39°F to 46°F) to simulate their natural cycle and stimulate breeding.
Humidity and Hydration: In the land zone, humidity must be kept high, between 70% and 85%, by regularly misting with dechlorinated or reverse osmosis water. Water quality in the aquatic section must be excellent: a slow to moderate-flow internal or external filter is recommended to avoid creating excessive currents that would stress the animals. Water must be free of chlorine and heavy metals; thus, using water conditioners or reconstituted RO water is highly advised.
Feeding and Supplementation: The diet must be varied and based on live prey. During the aquatic phase, they readily accept bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, tubifex, and small earthworms. In the terrestrial phase, they feed on appropriately sized crickets, mealworms, fruit flies, and springtails. It is important to dust terrestrial prey with a calcium and vitamin D3 supplement once a week to prevent metabolic bone disease, particularly in rapidly growing juveniles.
Compatibility: This species must be housed in a species-specific enclosure. Fish or other amphibians should not be introduced, as they could prey on the larvae, compete for food, or transmit pathogens. Cohabitation among individuals of the same species is generally peaceful if sufficient space and hides are provided, but population density must be monitored to prevent stress or territorial behavior during the breeding season.
Health and Common Diseases: The main risks are associated with keeping temperatures too high, which causes thermal stress and immunosuppression, making newts vulnerable to bacterial skin infections. Furthermore, the species is highly sensitive to the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal); all new specimens must undergo strict quarantine. Efficient air circulation in the terrarium prevents the growth of harmful mold in the land section.
