Tiger Shovelnose Catfish
Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum
The 'Tiger Missile' of the Amazon (100-110 cm / 3.5+ feet). If the Redtail Catfish is a massive, slow bulldog, the Tiger Shovelnose is a sleek, hyper-fast, armored greyhound. It is stunningly beautiful, covered in stark black tiger stripes, and features one of the most bizarre heads in nature: completely flattened out like a massive, bony duck's bill or a literal shovel. It is a blindingly fast, incredibly nervous pursuit predator that requires massive, empty swimming 'runways' in a 1,000+ gallon tank, otherwise, it will panic, blindly ram the glass at high speed, and permanently shatter its long, delicate face.

Perfil de peixe
- Temperamento
- Semi-aggressive
- They are highly predatory but not generally aggressive to fish they cannot eat. They will peacefully ignore tank mates that are too large to swallow. However, they demand respect due to their sheer size.
- Dieta
- Omnivore
- They are strict carnivores preferring live or frozen whole fish. Prawns, mussels, and squid are excellent dietary staples. Avoid feeder fish due to the high risk of disease transmission.
- Expectativa de vida
- 18-25 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 100 cm
- Proporção sexual
- Solitary
- Sex ratio is largely irrelevant for home aquarists. Most people can only barely accommodate a single specimen. Keeping multiples requires an indoor pond of gargantuan proportions.
- Frequência de alimentação
- Twice daily
- Feed juveniles once a day to satisfy their rapid growth. Adult specimens only require a substantial meal one to two times a week. Overfeeding adults causes fatty liver disease.
- Carga biológica
- Extreme
- The Barred Sorubim creates a massive bioload. Heavy-duty canister filters and large water volume are mandatory. They grow incredibly fast and pollute water rapidly.
- Fluxo
- Stagnant
- They enjoy strong water flow that mimics South American river currents. Robust circulation aids in moving their large waste to filters. High oxygenation is critical for their survival.
- Risco de salto
- Yes
- They are easily startled and possess immense leaping power. A heavily weighted or latched hood is absolutely essential. A startled Sorubim can easily jump completely out of the tank.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Breeding this giant catfish in home aquaria is practically impossible. They require seasonal flooding and massive river systems to spawn. Only commercial hormone-induced breeding is successful.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- With caution
- This is an apex predator that swallows anything smaller than itself. Keep them exclusively with very large, robust fish like Pacu or large Plecos. Small tank mates will vanish overnight.
- Nível do tanque
- Bottom
- They are bottom-dwellers that prefer resting under large driftwood during the day. They become highly active swimmers at night. They will patrol all levels of the tank in darkness.
