Description de l'espèce
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the island of Mauritius. It inhabits dense, humid upland forests, macadamia plantations, and native palm groves. Ongoing deforestation and habitat loss are reducing its wild range, making it a vulnerable species.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Member of the Gekkonidae family. Commonly known as the blue-tailed day gecko. It is widely considered one of the most colorful day geckos. It shares part of its range with Phelsuma guimbeaui, from which it is distinguished by pattern and coloration.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal, highly alert, and extremely fast. They spend their day active on tree trunks, hunting small insects and licking flower nectar. They are very shy and will instantly slide to the opposite side of a branch (eclipsing behavior) if disturbed. Strictly an observation-only pet.
Morphology: Reaches a length of 13-15 cm. Adult males display a grass-green head and back, with bright red spots or stripes, and a sky-blue or electric cyan tail and hindbody. Females are emerald green, much duller, and lack the blue tail. Females possess large endolymphatic calcium sacs on the neck.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Terrarium Setup: Requires a vertically oriented terrarium (minimum 45x45x60 cm). Prefer rough vertical branches (such as natural cork bark) and broad-leafed plants (such as Sansevieria) to provide cover. Add vertical and horizontal bamboo tubes.
Lighting and Heating: Heliophilic species requiring high-quality T5 UVB lighting (6-7% UVB) for proper calcium synthesis. Provide a localized basking spot of 32°C on an upper branch. Maintain ambient temperature between 25 and 28°C, with a night drop to 20-22°C.
Humidity and Hydration: Requires high humidity (70-80%), with peaks up to 85-90% achieved via morning and evening misting. They drink exclusively from water droplets deposited on leaves and glass; automated misting systems are highly recommended.
Feeding and Supplementation: Frugivorous and insectivorous diet. Offer powdered day gecko diet mixes (such as Pangea or Repashy fruit flavors) in elevated cups. Provide small crickets or fruit flies dusted with calcium and vitamins twice a week.
Compatibility: Highly territorial and aggressive. Housed best individually or, at most, as a bonded male/female pair in a very large enclosure. Avoid visual contact between adjacent terrariums housing males.
Health and Common Diseases: Skin is extremely delicate and tears easily if handled roughly. Maintain strict hygiene to prevent mouth rot (stomatitis). Constantly monitor the calcium sacs of breeding females (they should be plump and white).

Profil de reptile
- Régime alimentaire
- Omnivore
- Phelsuma cepediana requires a well-balanced diet to maintain optimal health and vitality in captivity. Its feeding regimen should closely mimic its natural dietary habits in the wild, including proper vitamin and mineral supplementation. Providing appropriate portion sizes and maintaining a regular feeding schedule are crucial for its digestive health.
- Taille adulte
- 14 cm
- Mode de vie/microhabitat
- Arboreal
- Phelsuma cepediana has adapted to a specific lifestyle that dictates the type of habitat it requires. It relies heavily on proper environmental enrichment, climbing structures, or burrowing substrates depending on its natural adaptations. Creating a terrarium that reflects these requirements allows the animal to thrive and minimizes captivity-related stress.
- Cycle d'activité
- Diurnal
- The activity pattern of Phelsuma cepediana is largely dictated by its natural rhythms and environmental cues. Knowing whether it is diurnal, nocturnal, or crepuscular is essential for providing appropriate lighting and heating schedules. Proper management of these cycles ensures the animal remains active, healthy, and exhibits natural foraging behaviors.
- Sociabilité
- Tolerant
- Phelsuma cepediana exhibits a variety of fascinating behaviors that can be observed both in the wild and in an enclosure. These behaviors range from territorial displays and communication methods to foraging strategies. Understanding these actions helps keepers provide a more enriching environment and detect any signs of stress early on.
- Reproduction
- Oviparous
- The reproductive cycle of Phelsuma cepediana involves specific environmental triggers such as temperature and humidity changes. Successful breeding requires careful conditioning of both the male and female to ensure they are healthy. Once eggs or live young are produced, specialized care and incubation are often necessary for a high success rate.
- Tolérance aux manipulations
- Display only
- Handling Phelsuma cepediana should always be approached with care and respect for the animal's boundaries. Frequent or improper handling can lead to significant stress, defensive behaviors, or even injury to both the keeper and the pet. It is best to keep handling sessions brief and allow the animal to settle into its enclosure afterward.
- Brumation
- Non requise
- Brumation in Phelsuma cepediana is a natural physiological process often triggered by seasonal drops in temperature and daylight. During this period, the animal will significantly reduce its activity, appetite, and metabolic rate. Keepers must carefully monitor temperatures and hydration to ensure a safe and healthy brumation cycle.
- Mue
- Periodic
- The molting process is a critical time for Phelsuma cepediana as it sheds its old skin to accommodate growth and renewal. Proper humidity levels and access to a humid hide are essential to prevent retained sheds, especially around the toes and tail. Careful observation during this period helps prevent complications and ensures a smooth shedding cycle.
