Description de l'espèce
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is endemic to the arid interior and coastal regions of Western and Central Australia. They inhabit sandy deserts, spinifex grasslands, and dry shrublands. To survive the extreme heat of the Australian outback, they dig deep burrows into moist sand dunes where they spend the day.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Carphodactylidae. There are three recognized subspecies: Nephrurus levis levis, Nephrurus levis occidentalis, and Nephrurus levis pilbarensis. Genetic lines are well-established in the reptile hobby, leading to various selective color morphs.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly terrestrial and nocturnal. They remain underground during the day to prevent dehydration and emerge at night to hunt insects. When threatened, they perform a defense display: barking, inflating their body, and waving their small knobbed tail to deter predators.
Morphology: Characterized by an oversized head, large lidless eyes with vertical pupils, and relatively smooth skin dotted with tiny flat tubercles. Their most defining feature is the short, flattened tail ending in a distinct spherical knob. Total length ranges from 10 to 12 centimeters.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Terrarium Setup: A desert-style enclosure of at least 60x40 cm is required for an adult. The substrate is critical: use fine, play-sand or reptile-safe sand at least 8-10 cm deep. Keep the lower layers of sand damp on the cool side to allow the gecko to dig stable, humid burrows.
Lighting and Heating: Provide a strong thermal gradient. Use an under-tank heating cable or mat to heat one side of the enclosure, creating a warm spot of 32-34 degrees Celsius (90-93°F) at the substrate level. The cool side should be around 24 degrees. UVB lighting is optional but beneficial at low levels.
Humidity and Hydration: While they live in deserts, local humidity inside the burrows must be kept high (60-70%). Moisten the sand under the humid hide daily. They rarely drink from bowls; instead, lightly spray the cool side of the tank once or twice a week at night so they can lick water droplets.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly insectivorous. Feed gut-loaded crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Avoid feeding oversized prey. Dust feeder insects with pure calcium at every feeding, and add a calcium supplement containing vitamin D3 twice a week to support their skeletal health.
Compatibility: Males are highly territorial and must never be kept in the same enclosure. Single geckos are best. Pairs or trios should only be grouped for breeding in larger enclosures, as constant harassment by males can cause severe weight loss and stress in females.
Health and Common Diseases: Sand impaction is the most common health issue, often caused by dehydration or calcium deficiency leading the gecko to eat substrate. Other risks include Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) and dysecdysis (stuck shed), especially on the toes and the delicate tail knob.

Profil de reptile
- Régime alimentaire
- Insectivore
- The smooth knob-tailed gecko is an active insectivore with a voracious appetite. Its diet in the wild consists of various desert invertebrates, such as spiders, beetles, and scorpions, but in captivity, it is easily sustained on crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Feeder insects should be appropriately sized, typically no larger than the space between the gecko's eyes, to prevent impaction. Regular supplementation with high-quality calcium and vitamin powders is crucial to support their skeletal health and overall vitality.

- Taille adulte

- Mode de vie/microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- Endemic to the arid deserts and sandy scrublands of Australia, Nephrurus levis is a highly specialized terrestrial and burrowing species. They possess robust limbs and shovel-like feet designed perfectly for excavating deep tunnels in loose, reddish sand. Their habitat setup in captivity must include a thick layer of diggable substrate to allow for the expression of this critical natural behavior. A dry surface environment coupled with a slightly moist lower sand layer perfectly mimics their wild microhabitat.
- Cycle d'activité
- Nocturnal
- This species is strictly nocturnal, spending the hot daylight hours deep inside complex burrow systems where temperatures and humidity are stable. They emerge to hunt only under the cover of darkness, utilizing their large, highly sensitive eyes to detect the movement of prey in the low light. During the night, they actively patrol their territory, ambushing insects that cross their path. Providing a natural drop in ambient temperature at night is important for encouraging their natural hunting activity.
- Sociabilité
- Solitary
- Known for their feisty and expressive personalities, smooth knob-tailed geckos display a range of fascinating defensive behaviors. When intimidated, they will stand tall on all four legs, puff up their bodies, and aggressively wave their unique, knob-like tails to confuse predators. They are also highly vocal, emitting a series of barks or raspy squeaks when annoyed. Despite this dramatic posturing, they are generally harmless and rely mostly on bluffing to avoid confrontation.
- Reproduction
- Oviparous
- Breeding smooth knob-tailed geckos usually follows a cooling period that mimics the Australian winter. Females are prolific layers, capable of producing multiple clutches of two eggs throughout a single breeding season. The eggs are buried in damp sand within their burrows to maintain proper humidity and temperature for incubation. Care must be taken to provide the female with adequate calcium stores, as the frequent egg production can quickly deplete her reserves.
- Tolérance aux manipulations
- Display only
- Smooth knob-tailed geckos are generally not considered a "hands-on" pet due to their delicate skin and easily stressed demeanor. Frequent handling can lead to significant distress, causing them to vocalize, bite, or exhibit defensive posturing. It is best to appreciate these geckos as display animals, observing their unique behaviors from outside the enclosure. If handling is absolutely necessary for cleaning or health checks, it should be done as briefly and securely as possible.
- Brumation
- Brumation is a natural part of their life cycle in the wild, triggered by the cooler temperatures of the Australian winter. In captivity, a controlled cooling period can be introduced by lowering the enclosure temperatures to the low 60s Fahrenheit (around 15-18°C) for a few months. During this time, the geckos will retreat to their burrows, cease feeding, and heavily reduce their activity levels. This rest period is particularly important for cycling adults in preparation for a successful breeding season.
- Mue
- Regular
- Smooth knob-tailed geckos molt frequently as they grow, shedding their skin in one continuous piece. The shedding process happens quickly, usually inside the high humidity of their subterranean burrows, which assists in loosening the old skin. Like many gecko species, they will consume the shed skin to hide their tracks and reclaim valuable nutrients. It is important to ensure their burrowing substrate holds adequate moisture, as environments that are too dry can lead to problematic shedding on their toes and tail.
