Geographical Origin and Habitat: The Condylactis Anemone (Condylactis gigantea) is a robust marine invertebrate native to the warm, shallow reef flats and seagrass beds of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the western Atlantic Ocean. Its natural biotope is defined by shallow, brightly sunlit environments where it firmly anchors its muscular foot into rock crevices or deep within coral rubble beds.
Taxonomy: Scientifically classified within the Actiniidae family, they are large sea anemones. Morphologically, they consist of a thick, highly muscular, brightly colored central column (foot). The broad oral disc is surrounded by dozens of exceptionally long, thick, flowing tentacles that taper to a fine point. A fully grown, expanded specimen can easily reach 30 to 38 cm in diameter.
Social Behavior: They are highly mobile, aggressive invertebrates. Like many anemones, they possess a strong instinct to wander the aquarium until they find their preferred combination of flow and lighting. They are territorial, and their long tentacles are loaded with potent nematocysts (stinging cells) that can cause severe biological burns to any corals they touch while wandering.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Sexual dimorphism is non-existent. Their coloration is vibrant and distinct: the thick, muscular foot is typically a solid, deeply saturated neon orange, bright red, or sometimes stark white. The long, flowing tentacles are usually pale white, cream, or greenish-brown, almost always terminating in a brilliant, highly contrasting dot of neon purple, vivid pink, or magenta.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Tank Setup: The aquarium architecture must accommodate their large footprint, highly mobile nature, and significant stinging threat. A mature marine aquarium of at least 150 liters is required. Because the Condy is a restless wanderer, all wavemakers, filter intakes, and powerheads must be completely covered with sponge guards to prevent the animal from being sucked in and injured.
Diet and Feeding: They are highly autotrophic, deriving substantial energy from their internal symbiotic zooxanthellae converting intense aquarium lighting into food. However, they are also active carnivores. Target feeding is beneficial for maximum health and growth; feed their tentacles 1-2 times a week using feeding tongs with small chunks of high-quality meaty foods, such as krill or chopped shrimp.
Water Quality: Widely considered one of the hardiest sea anemones available, they demand stable tropical temperatures (24-27°C) and salinity between 1.024 and 1.026. While they tolerate slightly higher nitrates than Pacific anemones, they strictly require moderate to high-intensity reef lighting (PAR 200-300). Under weak lighting, they will slowly lose their symbiotic algae, bleach, and starve.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Because Condylactis anemones originate in the Caribbean (where there are zero native Clownfish), they do not naturally host Clownfish. While captive clownfish may occasionally adapt, the anemone may also prey on them. They are dangerous to neighboring corals and will sting and damage SPS and LPS corals as they wander the tank.
Aquarium Breeding: Propagation in the home aquarium is rare. Unlike the Pacific Bubble Tip Anemone, the Caribbean Condylactis anemone does not naturally undergo longitudinal fission in captivity. They reproduce sexually in the wild via spawning. Attempting to manually split a specimen is fatal, resulting in lethal bacterial infections.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is mechanical injury from unprotected powerheads and wavemakers as they wander. The second major risk is starvation and bleaching due to inadequate, low-intensity lighting. The third risk is the damage they can inflict on reef tanks by stinging corals during their wandering.
