Geographical Origin and Habitat: The Eurasian minnow is widely distributed throughout the temperate zones of Eurasia, ranging from the Pyrenees in Spain across continental Europe to Siberia and northern Asia. It strictly inhabits cold, clean, and highly oxygenated freshwater environments, including fast-flowing mountain streams, small upland rivers, and clear oligotrophic lakes. It is commonly found over gravelly or sandy substrates where it shelters from strong currents.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified under the family Leuciscidae (formerly Cyprinidae) and belonging to the genus Phoxinus. It is a small fish, typically reaching an adult length of 7 to 10 centimeters, with rare specimens growing up to 14 centimeters. Its body is slender, streamlined, and nearly cylindrical, covered with very small scales that make the skin appear smooth. It features a small, terminal mouth adapted for feeding on drift.
Social Behavior: This species is highly gregarious and forms large, tight schools that swim actively in the middle and upper layers of the water column. The school provides protection against predators and facilitates foraging. In its natural habitat, it serves as a crucial link in the food chain, being a primary food source for brown trout and other predatory fish. In captivity, they exhibit an energetic but peaceful disposition.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Under non-breeding conditions, the body is brownish-green on the back, transitioning to golden-yellow on the flanks with a series of dark vertical spots or mottled markings. Aquarium Setup: A dedicated coldwater setup is required, with a minimum tank size of 120-150 liters to properly accommodate a school of at least 8 to 10 individuals. The aquarium should mimic a stream habitat, featuring a substrate of fine gravel or rounded river stones, driftwood branches, and robust coldwater plants like Elodea or Fontinalis. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as these active fish are known to jump when startled.
Diet and Feeding: An opportunistic micro-predator. In the wild, they feed on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface, and benthic algae. In the aquarium, they readily accept high-quality dry flakes and micro-pellets. However, their health and coloration are best maintained by regularly supplementing their diet with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, cyclops, and artemia.
Water Quality: Maintaining low water temperatures is the single most critical factor. The water temperature must be kept between 10 °C and 18 °C. Temperatures exceeding 22 °C will cause severe respiratory stress and can lead to rapid mortality; therefore, an aquarium chiller is typically necessary during summer months. The pH should be maintained between 7.0 and 8.0, with a GH of 8 to 15, and the water must be kept highly oxygenated.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: They are peaceful schooling fish and must not be kept singly. They are perfect for European coldwater biotope displays, where they can be housed alongside other temperate species such as stone loaches (Barbatula barbatula), gudgeons (Gobio gobio), or cold-tolerant snails. They are completely unsuitable for tropical community aquariums and must not be kept with large predatory fish like pike or large trout.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity requires a period of cold conditioning to simulate winter, followed by a gradual increase in water temperature and a simulated high flow rate (mimicking spring snowmelt). Spawning occurs over clean gravel beds where the female scatters adhesive eggs. The adults must be removed immediately after spawning, as they will readily consume their own eggs and fry.
Risks and Diseases: Highly vulnerable to poor water quality, elevated ammonia levels, and low oxygen levels. If the water temperature rises above their tolerance limit, their immune system is compromised, making them highly susceptible to fungal infections, bacterial gill diseases, and Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. Weekly partial water changes and strong filtration are mandatory to keep them healthy.
