Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the arid and semi-arid regions of central and western Australia. Inhabits rocky outcrops, woodlands, and sandy shrublands.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Member of the Pythonidae family, genus Antaresia. Recognized as one of the smallest python species in the world.
Behavior and Habits: Crepuscular and nocturnal. Terrestrial but readily climbs rocky surfaces. Exceptionally calm temperament, rarely showing defensive behaviors.
Morphology: Adults grow to about 2.5 to 3 feet in length. Displays a beautiful pattern of reddish-brown blotches on a tan background. Minimal sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Provide a terrestrial enclosure (at least 30x15x15 inches) with aspen or coconut husk substrate, multiple tight hides, and climbing branches.
Lighting and Heating: Create a gradient with a hot spot of 32-34°C using a regulated heat mat or ceramic emitter. Keep the cool side at 24-26°C.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain low humidity of 30-50%. Keep a shallow water dish in the tank and offer a humid hide to assist with shedding.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly carnivorous. Feed thawed, warm mice or small rats every 7-10 days for juveniles, and every 10-14 days for adults.
Compatibility: Keep individually. Solitary nature means cohabitation leads to chronic stress and feeding conflicts.
Health and Common Diseases: Respiratory infections from stagnant air, and incomplete sheds. Ensure clean water and good enclosure ventilation.
