Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Common in coastal waters and shallow sandy bottoms of Southeast Asia and the tropical Indo-Pacific. Lives buried in the substrate.

Taxonomy: Member of the Babyloniidae family, genus Babylonia. Possesses a heavy, smooth shell with an oval-conical shape. Reaches 4-6 cm.

Social Behavior: Peaceful and mostly fossorial. Stays buried in the sand and emerges rapidly using its siphon when it detects food nearby.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: White or cream shell base patterned with dark brown rectangular patches resembling a leopard. Separate sexes with no dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Minimum aquarium size of 80 liters. **Requires a fine sand bed of at least 5-8 cm in depth** to support its natural burrowing behavior.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous scavenger. Does not eat algae. Feeds on sinking fish pellets, leftover meaty foods, chopped shrimp, or dead organisms.

Water Quality: Specific gravity 1.021-1.025, pH 8.0-8.4, temperature 22°C-28°C. Maintain calcium levels to support shell integrity.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Safe with fish and corals. Avoid gastropod-eating tankmates like pufferfish, wrasses, and large hermit crabs.

Aquarium Breeding: Lays egg capsules anchored to the sand or rocks. Veliger larvae hatch from capsules but their survival in standard aquaria is very rare.

Risks and Diseases: Starvation in overly clean tanks lacking meaty detritus. Highly intolerant to copper medications and sudden changes in water salinity.

Reproduction
Specie a sessi separati. Depongono capsule ovariche ancorate al substrato sabbioso. Le larve schiudono dopo pochi giorni.
Compatibility & tankmates
Ottimo pulitore di fondo sabbioso. Si insabbia lasciando sporgere solo il sifone. Carnivoro opportunista, si nutre di avanzi e detriti di pesce, ma non attacca coralli o pesci sani.
