Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to Sumatra, Indonesia. Commonly found in slow streams, forest rivers, and shaded marshes with rich vegetation.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified within the Cyprinidae family. Features an oval-shaped body with large scales that create a grid-like pattern.

Social Behavior: Peaceful and gregarious. Should be kept in a group of at least 6 individuals to ensure they feel safe and behave peacefully.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body has a copper-silver sheen, with scales edged in black forming a checkered pattern. Breeding males show red-edged fins.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Provide a well-planted tank with open areas and a dark substrate, which enhances their natural coloration.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily accepts dried flakes, pellets, and small frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, and brine shrimp.

Water Quality: Prefers slightly soft, acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0-7.5). Avoid keeping them in excessively warm temperatures.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful community fish. Compatible with rasboras, tetras, and peaceful bottom dwellers. May nip long fins if kept alone.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Spawns among fine-leaved plants. Parent fish must be removed after egg deposition to protect the eggs.

Risks and Diseases: Quite hardy, but prone to stress and bacterial infections if water parameters fluctuate rapidly.
