Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Broadly distributed in the tropical Western Central Pacific, with major populations around Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa. Inhabits coral-rich protected lagoons and shallow seaward reefs down to 20 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae, genus Meiacanthus. Features a slender, scaleless body. Possesses defensive venom glands connected to hollow canine teeth in the lower jaw. Reaches up to 10 cm in length.
Social Behavior: Active and bold blenny. Swims freely in the water column unlike other benthic blennids. Uses live rock as a perch and shelter. Strictly diurnal.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Solid, brilliant canary-yellow coloration, with occasional green shading near the snout. No obvious sexual dimorphism exists, though mature males may have slightly longer tail filaments.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 115 liters. Live rock must be abundant to provide caves and crevices for shelter. A secure lid is mandatory as they are accomplished jumpers.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on zooplankton and micro-algae. Accepts mysis, brine shrimp, frozen foods, high-quality pellets, flakes, and nori. Feed 2 times daily.
Water Quality: Stable marine parameters: temperature 22-28°C, pH 8.0-8.4, specific gravity (SG) 1.020-1.025, GH 15-25, KH 8-12. Good water flow and high dissolved oxygen are recommended.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef safe. Peaceful toward other reef fish. May fight with conspecifics or similarly shaped blennies. Predators avoid it due to its painful bite.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Demersal, adhesive eggs are laid in rock crevices and guarded by the male. Successfully bred in captivity.
Risks and Diseases: Venomous bite can cause wasp sting-like pain in humans (handle with care). A robust species that rarely contracts diseases if water quality is maintained.
